There is a story that pretty much explains the meaning of the seven deadly sins.

In the night the guy goes to a local tavern, and proceeds to eat and drink in ridiculous amounts. After some hours he decides to go home, all drunk and messed up, but happy as fuck. Once he arrives he is too drunk to realize which room is his and instead enters his mother's room, who he later mistakes her with her wife and rapes her.
The rest of the story i can not recall correctly, but this is enough to understand what the deadly sins mean. They make people fall into worst sins because of them.
Think of them more as a moral code that people should have in order to have a decent and proper life for them and their society.
