The main usage for the deep web for people not using it for government business and similar purposes is to have a wall preventing the technically inept from flooding it, making it as shit as the regular web.

Tor is pointless unless you have a specific thing in mind. It's not a place you hang out. It's mostly just cp, drugs, and other illegal services (fake IDs, ssn, personalized snuff).
Also it's dangerous. Just download TOR, get a good vpn, troll around deepweb forums on the normal web until you find search engines (they go down constantly, so look for several) and go. No you would need a really good VPN as well and even then it would be dangerous.
A VPN stops your ISP from recording whatever you are doing and instead records it itself.
If you don't use a VPN your ISP will know where you went and what you did and so will the honeypot.
Only the site that you access and your ISP know your identity, but if you use a VPN you add an extra layer of defense. It's not really safe but it's much better than having nothing.

People claim you cannot index the deep web, but in fact you can to a certain extent. A few friends and I have modified the tor code so that when its configured as a relay, it will harvest hidden services that are being advertised to it.
Altogether, we we came up with about 50K unique hidden services. A lot of those were already offline when we checked, but around 1.5K were still online
What we found comprised was to a large part CP, from the looks of it it was a lot of CP. We found forums that were similar to violent desires back in the day. Also a surprising number of ISIS related websites, although quite a lot of them seemed very unfinished, non-functioning logins, open image directories, that sort of unfinished.
Its less exciting than the average person is led to believe.
