I'm not sure that they've diminished in number though, it's more a case that cults like Heaven's Gate are always going to be very rare compared to the large number of cults that, while crazy, simply keep to themselves.
in the past before the internet, social media, and cell phones, it was easier to get people isolated or severed from the rest of the wider social climate... cults need to exist in a vacuum where the outside can not come in.
you have to control the information the person receives... and any connection to the wider world breaks that.
