The Good Dinosaur
Reposting with a few edits what I wrote in another thread.
The Blair Witch Project (I know, it isn't groundbreaking now but it was when it came out) is maybe the most Lovecraftian and "philosophical" horror movie I've ever seen. The Witch as the Kantian Thing-in-Itself that we surround and wrap in tales and fragmentary accounts, the narrative noumenon becoming (hyper)reality and our lives being affected by our inventions - it really is an astounding movie, even on the technical side of things: it reminds me of Mekas's experimentation, or more generally the more autobiographical side of the New American Cinema.
Another mandatory pick is I Can See You, maybe one of the most lysergic horror films I've ever seen (well, excluding maybe Begotten and Pop Skull), one that manages to both unnerve and amaze. Few other movies, I think, managed to capture the uncanny that is so fundamental in contemporary horror.
Tetsuo: The Iron Man, while not being purely an horror, has managed to make everybody I've watched it with squirm and writhe on their seats.
The Strange Color of Your Body's Tears is perhaps the greatest Giallo movie to ever come into being, and bar none THE MOST visceral film I've ever seen, cinematography- and photography-wise. You can feel the cardiac rhytm of colors, the schizoid rupture of logic and perspective - I yearn for a "true" horror director to be inspired by this masterpiece.
The Nightmare, while getting a lot of flak on here for its religious-spiritual take on Sleep Paralysis (which, I agree, it's an act of extreme theleological incorrectness by the director[s]), still manages to be one of the most interesting horror movies of the last couple years, especially for its metafilmic qualities (which tie incredibly well into the whole "multidimensional" subtext, could go on about this forever) and the reappropriation of external footage - the legacy of Debord and its detournement, it just occured to me, and it makes me love it even more.

Pretty cool mockumentary/movie about aliens. Has a few scenes that are really unsettling.
Lake Mungo
More of a Mystery/Drama than a Horror movie, but still awesome to watch and definitely worth your attention. Has one jump scare'ish scene which is pretty fucked up, but the real mindfuck comes right before the movie's ending and also during when the credits are rolling.

Haven't even seen this one yet, but have heard A LOT of good shit about this one so I'm excited and without a doubt adding it to this list
The Nightmare
Regardless if you suffer from Sleep Paralysis, this 'documentary' has some very creepy scenes which are re-enactments from victims' experiences.
The Strangers
Kind of a slasher film, but the villains are pretty spoopy because of the layer of mystery present all the way through 'till the ending. Also doesn't help that it was based on true events.
28 Days Later
Don't listen to the moron up top who said he didn't care for fast zombies. This film is really well made, incredibly suspenseful and pretty nervewrecking. Which is exactly all the things a zombie movie should be.

It's a slow build, reminds me of the ghost stories of MR James (ancient evil in a rural church) and you get to know the two protagonists as they form a friendship, which makes what happens to them all the more horrifying

Yep. Watched it thanks to this thread and even though the premise is good (at least the haunted catacombs 'wait, are we walking into hell' part. The alchemy shit is retarded to the core), the movie goes from 0 to stupid in 3 seconds. There were maybe two shots that actually justified the mockumentary framing while all of the dialogue was written in the style of a horror/suspense flick, which was totally jarring throughout. It's a shame because there was some authentically good performance going toward delivering terrible writing.
At least I watched Noroi: The Curse afterward, which was a good chemo after the cancer I'd just watched.

Normally I very much dislike King's movie adaptions but I really, really enjoyed this one.
Part of it was because King himself said that he liked the ending, and if the big man likes it I can be okay with the changes.
The ending was haunting and so final, but I'm also a sucker for unhappy endings.
I know neither of them were made as movies, but two of my absolute favorites are Storm of the Century and Rose Red.
Obviously they only had so much to work with since they were tv miniseries, but in my opinion they're both excellent.

If you're looking for a horror movie in the fun direction, go for Tales of Halloween. It's not that scary, but it's a crap load of fun, having multiple stories: Some meant to be 'scary', others meant to be funny.
It's like Trick'r'Treat took itself a lot less seriously. Also: The best 'alien' horror short in a compilation horror flick you will ever see.
It's also a Halloween themed flick, so you may want to save it for then if you want to be in the Halloween spirit.
