Hey /x/

I just got back from visiting my parents, and my father showed me a strange carved rock he found when he was young. He's suspected for some time that the rock may have given him bad luck throughout his life, and he wanted me to see if I could find any information or insight into what it was. He's had it in his possession more-or-less for the last 50 years.

The story he told was back when he was a young teenager he found the rock down the hill from a burn pit, where (I guess?) many different people from the area would go to burn old garbage and furniture and such. He grew up in Western PA about an hour north of Pittsburgh, and his age would place the event somewhere in the early-to-mid 1960s.

The stone has a face on one side, and some strange rune-like symbols on the back. At some point, it split in half somehow, I didn't get the full story there. I also asked about the shiny/wet spots, and he said that he presumes it's some sort of oily runoff from the burn pit up the hill from where he found the rock.

I have a couple more pictures that I took, although they're not the clearest quality because of my Android PotatoCam. I did try to get some up-close shots with the help of a magnifying glass, which I'll post as well. Now, I wouldn't say I'd be fully surprised if /x/'s opinion is just that some kid carved up a rock 50 years ago, but on the off-chance that somebody here suspects this thing *is* actually causing him bad luck, I'd like more information on it or possibly a good means of getting rid of it.

He said when he originally found it it was in one piece. He's had it for about 50 years, and I guess at one point it must have split in half (like I said in OP, I didn't get the full story, but I could ask him)

Not sure what you mean by "the middle", so here's the back-side of the rocks.

If you just meant the middle of my photos, that's just the table cloth on the table I took the pictures. He keeps the stones in a box and wrapped in some old paper towels (which look a little like diapers in my photos :/),

Yeah, apologies, just now realizing how diaper-looking it is (mostly thanks to my shit camera). The table they're set on is a little "loud" so I thought taking the pictures on the old paper-towels that he keeps them wrapped in would work better

Here's the back, under a magnifying glass. Probably the last of the pictures I'd consider "decent" enough to post.

I should have taken some crayon rubs of the symbols, might have been easier to identify

>>17465143
lol. Never change, /x/
>>
>>17465068
Show it to a museum?
>>
>>17465158
That was one option he was considering. The second being to just put it back where he found it 50 years ago.

He did show it to my grandfather after he found it, who had said he would go get it appraised by someone who might know more about it. As far as anyone knows, that never happened though. My grandfather kept it in a box for ~10 years, before finally giving it back and then leaving my grandmother and basically starting a new family with some other woman.

The "h" looking character appears to be "Khen" from this image I pulled of Wikipedia, but I can't match any of the other runes that are clear enough to see from the pictures...

>>
>>17465187
what in the fu...? No, whatever is on that rock, it is certainly nothing in that image. where the fuck did you even find that? Link me to the wiki article you pulled that from.
>>
>>17465187
yeah, either wet the side with the symbols or rub it off to we can see better.
>>
>>17465215
Here's what I was thinking. Admittedly, I could be wrong, I don't know anything at all about runes and I'm just searching for a match. The image is from the Wikipedia article for "runes", in the Marcomannic section.

>>17465222
Yeah, now that you mention it, that would have been a good idea. Unfortunately, I left the rock at my parents' house, so I'll have to wait until next weekend to get more information on it.

Gotcha. Yeah, taking crayon rubbings was a thought that crossed my mind, but my father ended up leaving for work and I had to get home and work myself, so unfortunately time didn't allow for it.

As far as I can tell it doesn't match any sort of script I can find either. I was hoping someone on /x/ might have some more information, but unfortunately it seems that my original theory was correct: Some kid just carved up a rock 50 years ago, and it means nothing

Maybe I'll post again next weekend with clearer pictures and rubbings of the marks, but it doesn't seem like many are interested so maybe not, hahah. In any case, for my own help, here's my interpretation of the symbols.
>>
>>17465269
I'm interested. I just have no idea how to identify the markings

Could it be Native?
>>
>>17465368
As in, Native American? I really couldn't say, knowing next-to-nothing about their alphabets or symbols. It is possible, though
>>
>>17465068
Could be a totem or channeling stone for some old magician back in the day. I've made some myself for my guides and to channel power into my egregore. So it could also be a mash of random symbols from that but i don't know. Good luck
>>
>>17465579
Do you have any more info or resources for this stuff? What would those generally be used for? Would it still continue to have it's power if it weren't in the hands of the original owner?

It is an 8th to 9th century grave marker. Probably worth something to someone.

My father is Navajo. He says that this is indeed a bad omen. Something left behind from someone who was broken during their journey through Black Lodge. You're better off sending it to me. My people are good with dealing with these things. I'll give you $10 for it.

Looks like it could be some kind of native american artifact.
>>
>>17465068
1) It could be a piece of a burnt statue someone didn't want
B) It could be a piece of gradeschool art that children make
iii) It could be a native American artifact since our country was occupied by them for 13,000 years before we came
>>
>>17465068
OP you might have something rare here

I've studied these before, a very difficult thing to find

They call them fecal plates, years ago cavemen used to carve faces into their asscheeks and then sit on steaming piles of shit to make plates

What you have is a duplex fecal-plate, chieftains would shove their asscheeks together to make a double-sided impression that would seal their tribes together in alliance

A rare find indeed, treasure it always and wash your hands after your done touching it
>>
>>17465131
Put some clay on it so it fills the spaces, then remove the clay so the symbols are clearer.
>>
>>17465368

Doubt it, it has a Germanic look to it if you ask me. Which would coincide with the weird runes as well. Could've been a lost tribe of nords.

I have no idea what the message on the rocks is, but this reminds me of this film.

Don't play with fire, OP, you could end up regretting it.
>>
>>17465269
Wait, are these symbols on what was the inside of the rock before it was split?
>>
>>17468707
Nah man it ain't Norse, doesn't fit their style nor their runes
>>
>>17465068
It's not Norse, Celtic, Inuit, Sequoya, Inuktitut, Hoodoo or Voodoo. It's not Norwegian in origin, it's not Hebrew in origin.

It's closest to a kind of weird Norse/Inuktitut hybrid, which is a fun conception but in all probability is just random carving or missing significant lines.
>>
if he truly thinks it causing bad luck... it probably is.

gotta get him something that you truly believe will cause good luck. will cancel out. (▰˘◡˘▰)

a) that's got fuckall to do with Android
b) those shots are not bad at all, we don't need to see the atomic structure of the rock lmao
>>
>>17469420
What kind of weird fucker keeps something he thinks is bad luck around for decades? I had a friend who found a gun in a stream. The minute he took it home, he started having bad dreams. He got rid of the gun after five days. NOT FIVE YEARS, NOT FIVE DECADES, five days.
>>
>>17469447
That being said, if you want better photos, try better lighting. Sunlight works very, very well.
>>
>>17469452
put some white paper down on a flat surface, and drape some white paper in the back, a posterboard will work. must be white.

shine a lamp or perhaps a flashlight towards the white surfaces, this is your stage, white stage reflects the light very well and will make for good pictures.
>>
>>17469459
Use Christmas lights to define what you want. Cheap, easy, effective. Use parabolic frames for direction. Cheap, easy lighting is within your reach, anon! I know!

I really do. I have, as it happens, foodie blog friends who asked me to contribute recipes. So I did and before I knew what was going on, they had a bunch of tiny concave lamps with Christmas tree bulbs in them of the desired colors shining down on my ingredients. The results, on their webpages? Beautiful! Like, amazing even.

Hey guys, did my nightly check to /x/ and was surprised to find this thread still active. As I said in a couple of posts above, I'll be back next Sunday with (hopefully) clearer pictures and some rubbings of the carvings.

>>17469344
No, sorry if that was unclear. The face is on the "front", and the symbols are on the "back", pre-split. There's nothing of significance in the "middle" section >>17465114

>>17469397
Thanks for your help, I'm beginning to suspect that it is just insignificant, but it's fun to entertain other ideas. I'll be back with more pictures and information after next weekend.

>>17469450
Indeed, hahah. I won't say my dad isn't a little nuts! Although him thinking (realizing?) that it's been bad luck only really occurred to him in the past few months. Before then, he just thought he always had bad luck for no reason ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Gonna try something like these suggestions this Sunday! Thanks.

North of Pittsburgh, maybe 10-15 minutes from Ross Park Mall. He found it 50 years ago, so I doubt you'd be able to find much evidence. I'm still around the area as well, and his current idea is just taking the stone back and leaving it where he found that. Maybe I'll have more specific information for you after I talk to him on Sunday.
>>
>>17469731
Fucking A. I live 15/20 minutes north of Ross park mall.
>>
I'm not good with ancient riddles or runes and shit, but I can tell you that the rock has been halved by a man-made tool by a stonemason or blacksmith.

It's not a machine, or it would have been cleaner, and it's not by nature or it would have been rougher.

Geologyfag, out.
>>
>>17465081
OP, your dad found a rock belonging to the native Americans, it was carved and wasn't solid anymore. It could be very old. It stills is an artifact that could sell for some shekels

>>17469747
I believe he broke it by accident at some point. I dunno, I'll ask again this weekend and get the full story.

>>17469805
I believe it was whole when he found it 50 years ago. I will ask him again to be sure, though! He was considering taking it to a museum or something for a second opinion.

Breaking a rock is not an easy feat to pull of by accident.

Get back to us when you've had that chat this weekend though. Have a bump.

Op carved the rock. Clearly visible in various places are metallic residue from the carving device. Unfortunately, in order to age the rock, OP decided to chuck it in a fire, which is when it split and presumably acquired whatever that shit is stuck to the front. Just sayin'.
