It's not. It's actually PRETTY useless.
It's possible that it's metaphorical for SOME stuff, but as far as the symbolic worth of it- it's not very applicable to human life.

I would agree with this. Religion is used to provide a framework for life. Deities represent various archetypes, the festivals mark the progression of the wheel of the year.

Lovecraft's pantheon is a set of horror characters. He surely never intended anyone to actually worship them. They're not even really scarier than the scary deities of the old world. Go re-watch the "Night on Bald Mountain" segment from Disney's Fantasia. That's good stuff right there.
