It can also be understood intellectually, but that will not bring on the profound effects of the experience itself, as it will simply be understood from the egos point of view and will simply become one of it's many beliefs about the universe keeping you in duality. Knowledge can only be reached through experience, there is no other way.
If you truly want to see, you must be completely sincere in your search for truth. Do not try to reach it through anything but your own efforts, as that will simply lead you astray. No holy texts, nor saint can ever give you truth, it is only reached by yourself.
