I have a question though, regarding religion. Does anyone believe in the concept of selling your soul in exchange for success, wealth, power etc?
I'm not really into the whole /illuminati/ stuff but there's definitely a lot of weird stuff regarding artists saying they've sold their soul to the devil and shit.

I believe some people can sell their soul, but most people aren't of any value and malevolent entities wouldn't even bother trading for their souls. They want control immediately, not just after you die. You have to do what they want while you're still alive and most people not only suck at taking commands, but wouldn't be any good at what they need to do even if they were willing to be a demon's bitch.
oh I got one for you crazy fucks... MAYBE "the devil" is metaphorical for record labels and corporations that they sold out to. If you have any idea of how debt works, it can basically control your entire life forever unbreaking.

Is this why there's the whole musicians sell their soul meme? Control through media? I suppose that makes sense, but there are many artists who seemingly have little talent, so its hard to imagine that they themselves had much to bargain with before selling their souls.

Musicians are just one of many types of people that make for good puppets. Talent isn't all the necessary for success, sometimes you just need a good face to plaster allover, like a posterboy. It's really more of a personality thing.

Well it could be a placebo effect, which is documented scientifically as having an observable effect on health and healing. I don't think it would be much of a stretch that if someone believes they sold their soul (maybe they have a dream of such, and think it was the devil visiting them in their sleep) for artistic talent, that it would have an effect. Compounded with the confidence boost that would give them, that would make sense.
Just putting that forth as a hypothesis. I'm not saying devils don't exist and don't trade for souls. For all I know they very well may.

If you think about wealth and power as credits of time, or how much your acts are worth, then the exchange of your soul for its currency is decided at its core by materialistic means. If you live by how much your acts are worth in currency to you yourself than you have sold your soul. If you act in consideration with other you have gained your soul. This is what is meant when it is said "For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul? For what will a man give in exchange for his soul?…
Basically, when you die, what will you be left with if not material goods.

that's it exactly. there is no literal selling of your soul to the devil or demons. it's a metaphor for giving up your morals/ethics/values/principles so you can pursue fame and fortune at any cost and not care who you hurt or use or abuse (and not care whether you get hurt or used or abused) along the way.
doing the wrong thing can be very materially satisfying but if you still care about your own dignity or that of your fellow humans it's obviously the wrong choice.
