As a musician and a historian as well I've done a moderate amount of research into the evolution of music and how people consume it- in the late 1990's the U.S removed the regulation that stopped monopolies on Radio networks. A very successful group of car salesmen purchased half a dozen radio towers and using the revenue of these stations began to systematically purchase every single station that goes on sale. There is now a monopoly on North American Radio- 80% of all stations are owned by this conglomerate, which has begun to manipulate the musicians that are popular and who are not by blacklisting them from their stations.
