I don't really understand this symbol, perhaps someone here could help me out?
It's obviously a depiction of Moses' bronze serpent but why would a serpent save the lives of his followers? I would understand the symbolism if it meant turning to Christ on the cross but that hadn't happened yet (and wouldn't the snake be a pretty unfitting animal to represent the saviour?).
it's a metaphor for kundalini.
a more traditional view is that it means salvation is for everyone, even the serpent (devil) will be redeemed.
poison to force out poison is a sometimes effective treatment. I guess, God is the BIG snake which has power over all snakes, just as Jesus had a BIG death which has power over all death etc.

Read Jung on ancient serpent imagery.
>6 In response, the LORD sent poisonous serpents among the people to bite them. As a result, many people of Israel died. 7 Then the people approached Moses and admitted, “We’ve sinned by speaking against the LORD and you. Pray to the LORD, that he’ll remove the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed in behalf of the people.
>8 Then the LORD instructed Moses, “Make a poisonous serpent out of brass and fasten it to a pole. Anyone who has been bitten and who looks at it will live.” 9 So Moses made a bronze serpent and fastened it to a pole. If a person who had been bitten by a poisonous serpent looked to the serpent, he lived.
It's a sin/redemption story involving something hung on a stick, that's the link.
