Actually Werner von Braun credited Robert Goddard with inventing the technology that made the V2 rocket possible. That's why they call it the Goddard Space Flight Center and not the Von Braun Space Flight Center.
Goddard was an American scientist. He was largely ignored by fellow Americans. The New York Times used to laugh at him, claiming rockets wouldn't work in space.
