The original Hellsing anime is good in that regard. It doesn't have any of the retarded super deformed shit and needless anime-isms that most shows do. It's not as good plot wise as Hellsing Ultimate, but that does have anime-isms and I can't stand those.
Otherwise I'll also recommend Cowboy Bebop. It's essentially an anime that tries to be Western and largely succeeds.

Didn't read to see if it was posted, but, I've always thought Gantz was pretty down to earth. Without spoiling much, and don't get me wrong here, it is very much so a battle anime. But it's got a very dark and relatively somber tone to it. If memory serves (it's been years) the ending is akin to many television series that air today, in a very non-anime kind of way. It's dark shit dude, check it out.
