I hope this is the right place to ask^^

>Sony Vaio laptop from 2007
>some time ago sudden onset of green dots and lines on screen
>seem to appear only on dark or colored backgrounds, white is ok
>at first: moving mouse = moving GREEN, else static GREEN
>after some time: GREEN always moves
>happened once
>another day, watch video in MPCHC, laptop suddenly reboots
>today: I feel like shit, take a nap. wake up from laptop sounds
>laptop rebooted twice without me doing anything
>30min ago theGREEN reappears... first quite mild, then getting worse

From knowledge I can tell it should be the GPU dying. I doubt it's a virus or the hard drive. It could be my Windows (Vista... I know it's crap, but I won't reformat this laptop for reasons) as it was always having issues... but no graphics stuff like this. I tried closing all programs, monitored CPU&GPU temperature. Nothing out of the ordinary...

So I'm asking here what tech people think/know. It is a dying GPU, right? If not, what could it be and how/if can it be fixed? Any way to check if it's the GPU?
Any guesses how long the laptop could survive = how soon do I need to buy a replacement?
I don't really want to buy a new computer (money reasons), but I guess I don't have a choice... as long as the laptop starts/works I can use it in case I need help assembling the PC.

Thanks for any answers

I forgot something:
Around September 2015 the backlight in the laptop screen died = the screen appears black, but shining a light at it shows it's still working.
Since then I connect the Vaio via HDMI cable to my LG HDTV. The TV is definitely not the problem (game consoles show fine).
I'm mentioning this for several reasons:
>Laptop is already partly dead
>could be the HDMI cable? HDMI port?
>some related issue?

Needs its GPU reballed.

This is not cost-effective for a PC this old unless you know a local reballer and do all the teardown and assembly yourself (and even then!), or you have all the reballing tools to hand and can do it yourself.

Back when 2007 laptops were worth something, it was cost-effective to strip them down and send them away to a reballer, maybe even dropship them a new GPU from HK.

Now they're not and it's not.

Yep, GPU is the issue. If you have any files you care about back them up now.

I keep cheap USB hard drive adapters (I order whatever gets good ratings) so I can just pull drives and connect them to another PC for convenient data rescue, but whatever works for you.

If need a cheap replacement see Thinkpad threads on /g/.
