Beautiful. Is that Carl Sagan?
>>

out of context you won't really get what she's talking about since its plot related shit.

But do watch, it was a fun anime, its called when super natural battles became commonplace.
>>
>>953602

No, thats Carlos Sagano
>>
>>953606
Hey dude, not everyone has memorized his speeches. Although I did look it up later and immediately found it, so maybe you're right.
Still, I have no webMs on my computer that aren't inspirational speeches, and I don't want this thread to die.
>>
>>953608

dude, yes it is carl sagan, carlos sagano is the name my friend told me I should call him when I told him I was carl sagan's student in the sense that he was a professor to an astronomy professor I had.

he said I should call carl sagan carlos sagano cause I'm Mexican
>>

Damn. Can't find a translated version on Youtube. Oh well. Thanks for the sauce.

Yeah, the nutritional conditions and likelihood of upward social mobility for the 50 million impoverished people in the richest capitalist nation in the world are any better than those in work camps. My grandfather worked for decades for Mohawk airlines and was let go a month before he would receive full retirement benefits. He believed the fable of hard work paying off in a capitalist system. He took out a life insurance policy and shot himself to provide for my father and grandmother. Do you think that's a position someone should ever have to be in?

>Yeah, the nutritional conditions and likelihood of upward social mobility for the 50 million impoverished people in the richest capitalist nation in the world are any better than those in work camps.
Yes. Yes they are.
I understand that those kind of retorts get you retweets or uplikes or whatever from people in your social media echo chamber, but for us living in reality, yes, being born in a US ghetto is better than being born on board a freight train heading for Siberia.
>He believed the fable of hard work paying off in a capitalist system.
I mean I haven't lived in the USA, I don't know if that is really such a fundamental belief over there, but I think that anyone with half a brain should see that hard work CAN pay off in a capitalist system.
It's not guaranteed to. Shit happens. Some of it is in the people's power to predict and avoid, some of it isn't. That's not some grave injustice, that's just life.
>Do you think that's a position someone should ever have to be in?

>My grandfather worked for decades for Mohawk airlines and was let go a month before he would receive full retirement benefits.
Reminds me of an older gentlemen I talked to a long time ago at the doctor's office. I stayed with him for about an hour and a half just talking about life and how shitty it can get in a blink of an eye.
He worked for a company for about 30+ years, and was months away from full retirement and benefits. Then suddenly his superiors just happened to hire a young attractive woman to work directly under him even though he never asked for a such a thing. The woman was a complete bitch; she never did her job, spent her time on personal calls and flirting with guys. One day he got fed up with it, and politely asked her to get back on task. Apparently, the "manner" in which he approached her and talked to her was of a "sexual" manner, and was enough for her to go the HR and bitch and moan to them until he was let go, just weeks from retirement. They took away all of his benefits, retirement, everything. The shitty part of all that, while that was happening, his wife was cheating on him.
This guy had everything he ever worked for crumble beneath his feet in a matter of weeks, decades of sweat, toil, and tears all for nothing. Almost demotivates you from doing anything. But shit happens. He seemed fine that day I talked to him, but I never got to see him again despite going that doctor's office every day for a couple of months.

>repeating the Fox News mantra that the only alternative to pure unfettered capitalism is pure unfettered communism

In the United States, for about forty years following the end of the second World War, we had a growing and prospering middle class. Wages and salaries for the average worker were very high compared to what they were before, and compared to what they are now. It was the unions who won that prosperity for us. It was anti-trust legislation and financial regulation that won that prosperity for us. It was extremely steep progressive taxation that won that prosperity for us. It was a social safety net, including Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, free public education, and other subsidies for the poor which won that prosperity for us.

And then Reagan came along. And he and his acolytes have been tearing down those laws and institutions with both hands for the last thirty years. And, predictably, the middle class has begun to crumble. Our financial institutions have become bloated and unstable. The standard of living of the common man has remained stagnant or decreased over time, while the company executives and the Wall Street speculators have grown fat and monstrously, monstrously, monstrously rich at our expense.

Communism is not necessary to solve this problem. But I would rather vote for a communist than a capitalist, because at least he would move us in the right direction. Back towards the middle ground. Back towards the prosperity this nation once knew.
>>
>>975489
>In the United States, for about forty years following the end of the second World War...
There was a lot of wealth because it was one of the very few non-war ravaged civilized countries. It had recently had an influx of well educated immigrants fleeing WW2 in their home countries and those countries were repaying loans given to them during the war and buying products their devastated industries could not yet produce.
There is no going back to a situation like that. The world is a much more crowded and competitive place now and WW3 would end up going nuclear, ruining the prospects for any kind of large scale exploitation.
>Communism is not necessary to solve this problem.
Communism is not necessary to solve anything because it is not capable of solving anything. Every single communist state in history has been a feast for corrupt bureaucrats at best or a catastrophic crime against humanity at worst.

>The cruelty of communist regimes is a direct result of the economic system not being competitive.

No it isn't. Or have you not noticed that every 'communist'—communist-led would be more appropriate— regime participated in trading on the global market? The Soviet Union may have largely consolidated its internal markets and acted as a large corporation, but it neither had the power to remove itself from the competitive struggle of the global market, nor did its ideologists claim that power for it. The same holds true for most contemporary 'socialist' countries, all of which allow private property in the means of production and exchange to some degree. The Venezuelan government, for example, derives in the area of half its income from oil sales, as did the previous non-socialist juntas, and is at risk of insolvency from the recent decline in oil prices. That is hardly indicative of a 'non-competitive economic system.' Maybe drop the idea that the policies of states determine the economic system. The reverse is true: state policies are reactions to the economic system. That system, globally and despite the approval of any political pressure group, is capitalism.

Of course, language is a strange bird and the meanings of words change over time. These days, socialism is just public management of industry or services in an otherwise competitive context; communism simply a country-as-corporation on the global market. Despite any high claims about workers' states and peoples' power, 'Really Existing Socialism' was part of the capitalist system dressed in anti-capitalist phrases. Historical irony is no contradiction, however, and the fundamental critique that Marx makes of capitalism applies in every way to its 'socialist' efflorescence.

Those 'cruelties' were policies of consolidation typical in every way of corporations across the globe and could only take place because the authors could always find a market for the commodities thereby produced.

Competitive as in efficient, capable of matching/outperforming capitalist economies.
The huge state apparatus fails to organize a better standard of living for its people than capitalists and so to keep the people from dismantling it, it prohibits them to consume foreign media, prohibits them to leave, imprisons people arguing for its dismantlement, runs over protesters with tanks.
And yes, there certainly exist businesses that turn to abusive measures to ensure their continued existence, but when that happens, it's enabled by a corrupt state regulatory and/or legislative institution.

I deleted my initial response when I noticed that you hadn't actually contradicted me. If you wish to indict the Soviet Union for the abuses of its early history, I approve in every way. The fact remains, despite all platitudes, that the system of competition itself is the driving force of the behavior of corporations and countries. Capitalism is economic survival of the fittest, and no weakness can be tolerated in that struggle. High wages, investment in safer working conditions and conservative environmental policies are so many inefficiencies that rob an enterprise of its competitiveness.

Capitalism was just as alive in the Soviet Union as in liberal-democratic countries in the West and various banana republics in Central America. The aim of the Gosplán was the development of Soviet heavy industry, increased productivity of Soviet labor—in a phrase, the competitiveness of Soviet economy. The difference is administrative rather than fundamental, hence my original objection to your claim that 'socialist' economy was in any sense free from competition. Within the Soviet Union, commodities were produced, sold and exported; a balance of trade existed between it and the global market; it played a part in determining global price averages. It was an inextricable part of that continuum of commodity production and exchange: capitalism. Thus also with every contemporary 'socialist' state.

You may dislike state planning and 'government interference' in general, but you cannot rationally separate them from the capitalist system.

Anyone who wishes to convince himself of this need only compare the practices of British capitalists in the first three-quarters of the 19th century to those of the Soviet government in the early to mid 20th. Work-camps similar to Gulags, mass expulsions from the country-side, bans on immigration or emigration depending on the needs of employers and every other conceivable abuse—all this to be found on the record.

>Commodities were produced, sold and exported; a balance of trade existed between it and the global market; it played a part in determining global price averages. It was an inextricable part of that continuum of commodity production and exchange: capitalism.
You're using a peculiar definition of capitalism there.
The defining feature of capitalism is private ownership of the means of production. Which means that people organizing production benefit from making it more efficient and if they don't, someone else stands to benefit from organizing the production better and taking their market.

I live not far from a pretty big factory that produced this 1 design of agricultural machine for fertilizer dissipation onto fields for the entirety of the USSR for something like 20 years.
It was built here not because it's a good place for a factory, but because some grand geopolitical planning committee in Moscow decided this region needed more factories.
It made that 1 design for so long not because it was such a great design, but because a different committee in Moscow was tasked once to organize the production of such a machine, so it gave 1 constructor bureau a 1 time task to design it and that's what they'd come up with.
And the factory was told how many units to produce each month by a third committee with none of those committees suffering any repercussions for performing those tasks poorly and only standing to gain something from favours to their friends, family and powerful party members or undermining their rivals in the political power struggle.
Needless to say the factory shut down when we regained independence and it was faced with a free market. You still hear grumbling old farts blaming the independence.

I don't dislike 'government interference' in general. I in general dislike incompetence and being subject to people who can't be made accountable for theirs and the larger the government the more of those people there tends to be.

>The defining feature of capitalism is private ownership of the means of production.

Which implies a whole system of commodity production and exchange relations on that basis and presumes the existence of a global market. It is necessary yet not sufficient to describe capitalism in terms of private property in the means of production. The status of private property must follow the commodity through its several phases: from buildings, machines and materials; to finished product, transport, warehousing, and retail; to money again in a large enough sum to expand the original capital(s). At all points, 'ownership' under whatever contract or constitution is held by capitalists as individuals, corporate partners, political parties or entire governments. With more or less efficiency, they manage the process with a view to expanding upon existing operations and consolidating market space.

The point I am trying to drive home is that the Soviet government in the above terms was playing the role of a capitalist. It acted on the global market as a capitalist entity relative to other capitalist entities.

For socialism to have any meaning other than a certain brand of capitalism, it must be global.

>I in general dislike incompetence and being subject to people who can't be made accountable for theirs

In the example you gave, it is clear that the factory began and kept operating because of state planning and protection. What is also clear is that much of the original problem was a lack of bureaucratic expertise and skilled engineers. Those problems can be overcome in time. Capitalism, however, can never overcome the inherent waste involved in competition. Market competition may cause incompetents to fail, but it does not reliably do so quickly and never does so before material assets and human effort have been wasted.

On system can improve. The other cannot.
>>
>>980919

with tariffs and the sort incompetency abounds, it's an unnatural equilibrium

You seem to be misunderstanding the word 'private' in 'capitalism is a system defined by private ownership of means of production'

>Those problems can be overcome in time. Capitalism, however, can never overcome the inherent waste involved in competition.
Okay, in a world of perfect people, competition would be a waste.
The thing is we live in world of fundamentally, grotesquely, flamboyantly flawed people.
>>
>>980963
>You seem to be misunderstanding the word 'private' in 'capitalism is a system defined by private ownership of means of production'

On the contrary, I believe you misunderstand the word private in that context. There is no fundamental difference between a government, corporation, or individual holding property in the means of production; they do so privately. When they operate, they do so in the context of a global market. They produce, compete for sales to consolidate market space, and expand their powers of production to become even more competitive. The only difference is scale.

>Okay, in a world of perfect people, competition would be a waste.

Competition always results in waste, as real assets and real efforts are tied up in enterprises that will ultimately fail. Human frailty is not the cause of competitive waste. The anarchy of the capitalist mode of production is.
