Watched Grave Of The Fireflies this morning. I'm normally a giant crybaby, and everyone always told me that movie would make me cry, but it honestly didn't. I knew, like 20 minutes into the film, that the little kid was going to die, so it had basicly no impact. And most of the film was just boring.

I also just finished Only Yesterday, because Wikipedia told me it was one of only a small number of films that have 100 percent ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, but frankly, I didn't like it either. It was even more boring than GOTF, and the protag came off as one of those people who just sits around dwelling on the past all the time, and wasn't interesting at all. If the movie had just been about her childhood, without the stupid framing story about the farm, I would have probably liked it.

Its mostly great if you enjoyed the first Utawarerumono, but if you're wondering, after the first cour (Episode 13 or so), it becomes more or less a battle anime. Usually about armies clashing, stuff like that. The first half is world/character building.

>>
>>
>>

Why would I bother?
First, I load a file. It takes a while indexing and extracting attachments even though I don't need them.
Then I either have to pick between CBR (which isn't good for non realtime encoding) and pure CRF. VP8 can do VBR and CRF with an upper bitrate limit so what is the point of supporting only inferior modes?
Then I need to trim, so I go and I have to go through the frame previewing thing that doesn't even show millisecond and doesn't let you skip to a certain frame or timestamp.
Then I can finally fucking encode, except I can't because he fucked up his dependencies or something.
I doubt it'd look better with CBR anyway.
>>
>>
>>
>>
>>918367
The preview does let you skip, if you click
crf is for keeping a set quality so you don't have to measure the needed bitrate, the first pass does that

Any other mode even wanting to let people choose bitrate or file size is inferior, they have no idea what is needed on a scene by scene basis

But say if you were to adjust the tolerance window for the fucking quality, the same result of a bitrate limit is achieved

Anime?
>>

>The preview does let you skip, if you click
It doesn't let you go straight to a frame or timestamp, you have to guess. You can't even tell what is the time in the video unless you set a point as start or end as far as I can tell.

first pass lets the encoder know what parts of the video need more/less bits and adjust... based on the rate control (be it crf or bitrate).
Assuming 2 pass encoding, CBR is the worst way to control bitrate. Not only is it not accurate but it results in worse quality than VBR.
>>
>>918367
Edit the arguments in the advanced tab if you want VBR, it's just ffmpeg arguments there.

CBR is for livestreaming when the compressor cant see into the future because the file isn't complete and for smoothing out network jitter you dignus

It wont be any worse quality than VBR, its just either too much or too little. WFR does both if you really checked.
>>
>>918499
Yes so there is no fucking point in using it.
And the "variable" frame rate is just CRF. You can't actually use the VBR mode, it doesn't let you pick a bitrate if you switch to "Variable"

that you can't control the bitrate?
I want to make webm with a size limit, how the hell is it a good idea to pick between CBR and CRF? It's just clunky.
>>
>>918510
What's the point you're trying to make here, besides the fact that you're too stupid to figure out how to do VBR? just use what you want and move on.
>>
>>918510
ah theres your problem, we all had this awhile ago

we control size through the CRF values of tolerance because they control the quality _via the fucking bitrate_
>>
>>918516
I'll use my own fucking application that can do VBR without rewriting the command line, yeah, thanks for the advice.

If you don't understand the difference between VBR and CRF then you don't know how VP8 works.

>>918520
So you have to do multiple encodes if you don't hit the bitrate you want?
You do know that VP8 supports using CRF with a bitrate used as a ceiling so you can get the benefits of both, right?
>>
>>918458
That was amazing quality for such a long .webm. Got any more?
>>
>>918362
Is this the same one where she was beaten by her parents?
>>
>>918525
If you're using crf, ffmpeg can't reliably match average bitrate to target bitrate with a single pass. That's why in some cases the average bitrate will be pretty far off from what you specified on the command line.

If you use two-pass encoding, ffmpeg will calculate the variable bitrate values on the first pass then use them to encode on the second. Then your average bitrate value will match the target that you specified. See https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/Encode/H.264#twopass (article is for h264, but this applies for VP8 as well).
>>
>>918626
There's no bitrate field for the variable mode in webm for retards (unless I downloaded the wrong fork) and that's what I'm commenting about.
There is a bitrate field in the constant mode and that does cbr, not vbr.
I know how vp8 works
>>
>>918247
>>918251

Is she trying to hide that they is a android?
>>
>>918630
What exactly is your issue? I'm not even sure what you're trying to say at this point. If you wrote your own encoder (which I highly doubt, at best you wrote another wrapper for ffmpeg), just use it and fuck off. Nobody cares what you think of webm for retards. If you actually have a question, ask it clearly and stop talking about how much more you know about the subject than everyone else.

Are you familiar with the Dunning-Kruger effect? You might want to look into it.
>>
>>918525
>So you have to do multiple encodes if you don't hit the bitrate you want?

I rarely do anymore, because just from keeping the crf at defaults, and only difference being scene complexity, i have a much better understanding of what is more compressible and what isn't.

If you set an upper limit on bitrate but you don't understand motion compression keyframes and p-frames, your high motion detail scenes will artifact like shitsoup.

You can't just slap a limit on the bitrate and hope it will turn out fine.

quality over quantity?
>>
>>918662
It's an interface yes, obviously (that's not what wrapper means).

If you didn't care, you wouldn't be defending it, like it's ok to block out the most useful rate control modes of the codec and support the shittiest one by default.

>>918685
what do I give a shit what you know about compression? If I want a quality level but am worried it might be too low, I set the ceiling and even if I don't get what I was targeting I can upload it.
I bet most people who use webm for retards end up using CBR because they want that 4mb limit, and it ends up worse as a result. I guess the name should be webm BY retards.
>>
>>919021
Also pointing out that I just said I couldn't do a comparison because it was fucked, and others started arguing about it.
>>
>>919021
>If I want a quality level but am worried it might be too low

crf 10 and tolerance 20 is fine, theres no need to set bitrate limits because if it does go over that it will either be a large overshoot(in which case i split it without re-encoding using Solveig) or way under

for the tiny amount of times its close, increasing tolerance to 22 or 25 has seen a sizeable reduction in ceiling bitrate and thus file size

You seem very determined to use hard bitrate limits manually when that is even more tedious than crf bounds
>>
>>919029
How is it tedious? It gives exactly the result that you want without having to fuck around.
If I want to use CRF I can use CRF, if I want to hit a bitrate I can use a sane mode like NOT-CBR.

And splitting a file is completely useless. there is no control on when it ends, it will look stupid at best.

>>919021
>>919024
I've never even used webm for retards, so I really don't care about it at all. I'm just trying to figure out what you're trying to get out of this discussion. It sounds like you're trying to ask questions, but then you assert your superior knowledge of video encoding every time someone tries to answer. Are you just trying to complain about webm for retards or promote your own project? All I've been able to gather so far is that you have very poor communication skills and a severely inflated ego.

Also, that is what wrapper means. FFmpeg already has an interface (a command line interface). Maybe you're actually accessing the ffmpeg C libraries directly, but I doubt it. Assuming you wrote a GUI, whatever toolkit you're using almost certainly can't interact with ffmpeg directly, so you must have written some code to adapt the GUI toolkit's interface to ffmpeg's. That is a wrapper. You didn't write ffmpeg's interface, you didn't write the GUI tookit, all you contributed was a wrapper and some GUI design. But that doesn't matter, there's no point in arguing semantics. I'll agree to your terminology if it helps you get to your overall point.
>>
>>918357
Anime?
>>
>>919187
If you are not even talking about the same thing, then why are you responding at all?
I already mentioned I was talking about webm for retards and I never even mentioned my application so I have no idea why you would think that I am promoting anything. I do have to remind you I know how shit works when you keep ignoring what I am saying and re-explaining the same shit 5 times.

Normally you do not call programs that process a fair bit of data "wrappers" even if they have the goal of processing something with a specific library or application. Processing input in GUI components and transmitting them to an application doesn't make a wrapper. Directly mapping between two software libraries with minimal processing does, but that is different.
See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrapper_library

And for the record I am using libav c libraries, not ffmpeg though.

I was going to make fun of you guys, but actually it was pretty hard for me to find as well.

First, because I'm not a complete newfag, I saved the webm and opened it in VLC, but the title just said "the game". So that was no help.

Then I tried googling the words she says.
>Ansuz Fehu Uruz Thurisaz
Unfortunately, these are apparently just the names of actual ancient norse runes. So it produced a lot of irrelevant bullshit. I tried including the keyword "anime".
>Ansuz Fehu Uruz Thurisaz anime
>Ansuz anime
But Google ended up just returning most of the same results, but with the word "anime" crossed out. I got a little desperate.
>Anime with runes
This just produced a completely different anime, called Rune Soldier. No good. But then….
>Anime runes Ansuz
After scrolling past dozens upon dozens of irrelevant images, I managed to find this.

A boy falls in love with a girl.

Unable to confess, he is gifted with by a deus ex machina with the girl's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.

But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.

Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE.

As much as I loved FLCL, any sort of sequel would just explain everything in the story, or at least give more information to go off of. The only reason I think FLCL is as fun as it is derives from the fact that most people have no idea what the fuck is going on.

Sorry for talking about anime in an anime thread, you monstrous autistic cunt.
>>
>>923049
Agreed. The whole point of FLCL, and one of the reasons why it should be everyone's first anime, is precisely because it makes so little sense, and seems to follow weird crazy dream logic from start to finish.
>>
>>923417
it doesn't represent 99% of anime at all though, either you don't like it and stop watching anime because of it even though you could enjoy normal shows or you like it and then get disappointed if other shows aren't like it
flcl is fun but it is no way a good anime to start with
>>
>>923418
But a lot of anime— and I mean a LOT— contains all sorts of weird abstract moments that sometimes don't make much sense. FLCL gets you into the mindset of watching anime. Furthermore, at a measley six episodes, it's one of the shortest anime series out there, making it very easy for a noob to get through. It was my first anime, and I'm glad it was.
>>
>>923420
>weird abstract moments that sometimes don't make much sense
have you ever considered that they make sense you just don't know what they mean? also no it's not a good show to start with if you want to get into anime, it's better to just start with entry level shows that grab people's attention and not just "lel this show is so WACKY XD" not to mention that flcl made plenty of sense as well, so again it's better to watch it once you know the roll and not just be "lel I don't know whats happening xD"
>>
>>923422
Watching anime should, above all else, be fun. If it weren't fun, we wouldn't do it. Kill La Kill is a fun anime. It's completely over the top in every respect. Things only barely make any sense. There are lots of anime that are like that. FLCL takes that to the utmost extreme, and does so in only six episodes. It's one of the funnest anime there is. Sure, if you're some snobbish pretentious nutcase who insists that anime is high art, then maybe you care about how everything in FLCL actually totally makes complete sense but is just incomprehensible to plebs like the rest of us, then yeah, maybe you don't think a noob should watch it. But I watched it, loved it, and then watched more anime.
>>
>>923445
I don't find autism fun, maybe you do, but then you're just autistic and shouldn't assume that everyone else is as well
also stop saying noob or go back to /v/
>>
>>923420
FLCL is one of the WORST anime i've ever seen, to this day i still don't know how i mustered the will to plow through each chapter of stupid nonsense, it's one of the reasons i hate gainax in general as they don't do anime i enjoy.

I'd NEVER make a new guy start with FLCL after one ep they'd just abandon it and never watch anime, it's the worst first impression you can give unless that person is into abstract and nonsense crap.

FLCL is NOT fun, kill la kill for example is, just like TTGL, because it makes sense and is over the top, FLCL is boring, short and doesn't make sense, there's also no story.

sorry but i like my animes with cold brutal hard sense and well defined world-rules, also with a specific storyline(if possible, however thin it might be)
>>
>>923449
Look, I love seinen too, but I would never have discovered seinen if I hadn't gotten into anime as a whole in the first place. If you're just some newfag who's never watched an anime before, and you jump straight into Paprika or Planetes or whatever, it's just going to seem like "animation, but japanese". It's not going to lure you into anime as a whole. You need something that really brings out the ways anime is stylisticly different from western animation. There are two really good avenues to that, in my opinion – either FLCL, or anything by Ghibli.
>>
>>923451
>There are two really good avenues to that, in my opinion – either FLCL, or anything by Ghibli.
>calls anyone a newfag
okay
>>
>>923452
The other guy told me to stop saying "noob".
I'm saying that a newfag to anime should watch newfag anime, like FLCL or Ghibli films.
>>
All I'm saying is that if somebody's never watched anime before, and you want to get them into anime, don't fucking make them watch some hard seinen like Planetes. Even if they like it, it won't get them into anime as a whole.

A newfag to anime should watch newfag anime. They can watch deeper stuff later. FLCL is a good starter anime for two reasons: it's only six episodes, and it shows off the weird side of anime, something you don't see a lot of in western animation. They don't have to "get" it. They just have to have fun.
