I was kinda hyped for a second to mention how well I thought Dion Beebe handled shaky cam in Edge of Tomorrow as a response or reaction to the action in the scene, rather than a stimulus to.
I don't think the director himself (actually the guy that did Bourne Identity) is all that great, but Beebe is a top notch DoP and one of the best in the business when it comes to making digital film "work"

yah, he actually gets what it's for, and why shaky cam can be good, right when we go into cage's space, when things are at their most chaotic and disorienting, that's where the shaky hand cam is good
people seem to just chuck it in, and i guess they figure that it "makes the scene authentic" or some other horseshit. what it makes the scene is unintelligible nine times out of ten. what kind of lazy filmmaking is that anyway, you have to at least frame your shaky hand cam shots with some sort of context god fucking dammit.
shit beebe is good btw, and you can actually see a personal style emerging in the movies he works on, and i love edge of tomorrow, it was actually fun and different for a change, one of my favourite action movies of recent years. doug liman on the other hand, you are probably right about, his films are plots and scenes, not all going in a coherent direction. i think what eot is really about is cage's rebirth, but we dont even get much of that through any part of the film. sure he starts out reasonably awful, and does change, he becomes proficient in combat, and right at the end he pulls his finger out character-wise, but what i really wanted was for him to actually try and fail to be better.
