No, what happened was that a police officer disobeyed orders and fired onto the crowd. The people reasonably began to panic. Actually, yes. Not belts, mind you, but part of setting up an M2 to operate requires you to insert the barrel within a specific amount of 'clicks', and then take a special tool called a 'head space and timing key' at two points of the bolt assembly to, well, do exactly what the tool name suggests: Ensure the head space of the assembly is at a very specific width with one thick key, and then a second, much thinner one is inserted at a separate point as you pull the trigger to make sure the timining is set right(I might have the trigger part mixed up between the two, I got out years ago.)

Neat. Yeah, they're all old as fucking dirt. You can easily find some in the service that were in use as far back as 1920. As old as they are, the design hasn't really been touched the entire time with the exception of the ammunition, and the weapon itself is perhaps the sturdiest piece of military equipment I've ever seen(As in, it will fire, but not always the most reliably.).
Thing is riddled with all sorts of stupid 'quality of life' problems, though. The biggest being head space and timing, and the second biggest being the bolt assembly when it comes to breaking it down and putting it back together. There is a specific piece that, for some reason unknown to me, can be configured in an alternate setup(Possibly for feeding from the right instead of the left, such as in AA mounts) that apparently the Army doesn't really deem fit to properly explain to junior enlisted, leading to the occasional accidental assembly in the wrong configuration that prevents proper loading.
