That was a major standout scene for me.
Starkiller base is so perplexity out of place in that movie that I haven't been able to think about much else. I have no idea what kind of scope they're going for.
Apparently you can jump to lightspeed and get where you're going in 3 minutes flat.
They introduce and destroy The New Republic in 1 scene. They go 10x bigger than the Death Star and destroy it in Act 3.
If they had scaled back a bit I would be all over this movie. Instead, You can have a decent character story with a scifi backdrop, but JJ proved with Treck that he can't do it.

The 2nd Battlefront game kind of covers this: The empire is (regardless of their morals) an actual military complex. The rebellion are insurgents and guerrilla specialists. every time you move to a system to take it, you stretch your resources a little more, you create gaps. Those gaps are how the rebels sneak back and take back installations, shipping routes, bases, even planets.
The Death Star(s) primary purpose was intimidation, not deployment. It was meant as a way to say to every planet "If you harbor the terrorist rebels, we will consider it an act of war and destroy you." It made planetary governments ready to turn on their supposed allies to stay on the Empire's good side.
Look at how things are going here and now with decade long campaigns against Al qaida and ISIS; we're trying to do what we can, but they slip away and hit back. If it wasn't so monstrously horrible to threaten nuclear action, it might have been attempted by now to root them out.

It makes me so sad that because of Disney acquiring Star Wars, almost everything that has been put out is considered non-canon. Old Republic is considered non canon in it's entirety, all of the novels, Dark Lords of the Sith like Naga Sadow, Marka Ragnos and the very first Dark Lord of the Sith, Ajuunta Pal, now all considered non canon. The only Sith Lord I know of in old sources that is considered canon is Darth Bane, and even then they do not aknowledge any other source material involving him save that he created the rule of two. His only canon appearance in the new canon is in The Clone Wars animated Series.
