The scene is actually fairly simple and makes complete sense.

>Bane lets himself get caught
>CIA guy tries gatherin info from dudes using fake out of dropping them out of plane to make them talk while in air
>Bane does plan to replace dr hes kidnapping with dead body in order to fake doctors death by crashing this plane (with no survivors)
>bane succeeds in plan in dramatic style

not really much to it that doesnt make sense other than typical movie stuff put there to be more exciting.

The entire scene is really awkward and has George Lucas-tier shitty writing. Capeshit isn't exactly my cup of tea but I can see how fans would consider it to be worthy of mocking.

It was the first scene of tdkr to be released. When /tv/ first saw it they were making fun of the bad writing, particularly the conversation between CIA and Bane.
>if I pull that off will you die
>it would be extremely painful
>you're a big guy
>for you
It was confusing as people weren't sure if that CIA saying 'you're a big guy' was actually interrupting Bane's line, which would have been "it would be extremely painful, for you". An AMA thread on leddit with the writer of the scene confirmed that there was no mistake. Bane really is a Big Guy
for you
Because CIA is a terrible actor, really stands out relative to the rest of the cast.
>>
>>867749
It's just so fucking badly written.
>If I take that mask off you, will you die?
>It would be extremely painful.
>You're a big guy.
>For you.

When I watched the movie in theater, and for years thereafter, I didn't even understand this exchange. I thought Bane was saying he was big, compared to CIA, in other words that CIA simply wouldn't be strong enough to wrestle the mask off him. It wasn't until only a few months ago that I suddenly sat up in my bed one night, realizing that he meant, "It would be extremely painful… for you."

That's not the only line that's bad, of course. The entire scene is just laughably terrible, from start to finish.

>>882227
Hey, hey now. That's not true. Aidan Gillian is a good actor. He did the best he could. But even he couldn't take a shit script and make it alright.

I still don't understand how anyone could possibly misunderstand that exchange. It's completely obvious. I used to assume people deliberately turned it into a joke, but it turns out people are just really dumb.

You're like one of those people who looks at an optical illusion that can be seen two different ways, sees it one way, and then calls people who see it the other way dumb.

The scene is badly written. The lines make little to no sense. They are easy to misunderstand.

Brilliant. They're speaking Swedish.

My theory on what the scene was supposed to accomplish:
- Present the CIA as arrogant bastards that torture people by staging fake executions
- Present Bane's henchmen as being very loyal to him
- Present Bane as working for a sympathetic cause
- Present Bane as being a clever supervillain whose complicated plans always work out
- Introduce Bane
- Introduce Dr. Pavel
Unfortunately because of the ludicrously complicated plan and flat dialogue, the only thing that it really accomplished was "Introduce Bane". When Pavel appeared later, only to be executed, I had to struggle to remember who he is and whether it was supposed to be a surprise that he was still alive.

Literally nobody except autists misunderstood it. I am not saying it was master writing, but it's reasonably clever wordplay that went over the heads of some dim bulbs. In their shame at being unable to catch a pun-tier little joke, they have to overcompensate by attacking what they didn't understand. To reiterate, it's not that the bar was so high you need to be smart to understand it. The bar is average and these drips still couldn't reach it.

It's not a bad scene, or bad dialogue. It served its purpose in setting up Bane as a weird, Batman-villain freak who was not to be fucked with and plans things to the letter.

I am not sure how a single person could possibly misunderstand any of it barring actual inability to grasp social interaction or context via autism or such similar. Yeah the action is fast and somewhat complicated but not accidentally (it's supposed to take you off-guard and make you wonder wtf Bane is doing but not tough to get what's happening).

Bane gets on plane using Pavel as bait so he can find out what the CIA knows that might threaten his plans. He brings 3 guys with him, a simple shell game ensues. The CIA guy calls in that he has Pavel, he and his men, and one prisoner. Therefore Bane has to leave one of his men in the wreckage to match the report already called in.
>>
>>953294
The pilot knows shit is about to go down but nobody could possibly expect the ballsy kind of League of Shadows op that is happening, and the pilot says something but CIA is busy with Bane and distracted. They bring down a corpse and put Pavel's blood in it (in case the CIA bothers to try to check, they will find Pavel's blood). .Bane has broken the CIA guy's face (whether or not it kills him is irrelevant but it sets up Bane as a guy who will just crush youcasually).nHis men drop down, shoot the soldiers. They put clamps onto the plane, blow the tail off, and drop the fusilage, covering their tracks while they escape out the rear of the plane. The ending shot neatly mirrors the scene in TDK when Batman gets Chow out of HK and tells you that Bane is able to pull off the same shit, only better, and this is the overall theme of the movie. Unlike the Joker who (supposedly) has no plan and is basically an anarchist, Bane acts with military precision, has a force of super-competent zealots who will die for him at a second's notice, is physically brutal, cunning, and will stop at nothing...all inside about 6 minutes.

Compare and contrast to the opening scene with the Joker's intro in TDK.
>>
>>938291

I am not disagreeing necessarily regarding your assessment of the scene's effectiveness. But I can tell you that it definitely works better on a second viewing of the movie because it's convoluted and soooo damn long. Like nearly 3 hours or something. As to Pavel, you're just meant to say, "oh damn this is what they needed him for."

I am not sure what was so complicated about the Master Plan (tm), though. Get on plane using deception and theatricality as per League of Shadows Guidebook, replace Pavel with corpse, replace expected hostage per radio passenger list with zealot. Tear plane in half to destroy it, escape with Pavel out of the opening prior to dropping it.

I feel like people get the Plan just fine and it's not the how or the what, it's the why. Because as you said, you don't find out until like an hour later and have no clue until then.
>>
>>939453
....Because pulling off the bandaid would cause Bane to smash his face. I have literally heard the same basic joke irl for years before this movie.

Except he already had Dr. Pavel in his custody. He could've asked him without bothering to get on the plane.
I just got baited didn't I?
>>
>>956303
Furthermore, even if he needed to fake Pavel's execution he could've swapped a dummy's body with Pavel's blood and then sent it via airmail.
>>
>>956303
>so he can find out what the CIA knows
Holy shit, do keep up.
>>
>>956579
The CIA can't know anything because Pavel was with Bane to begin with.

And besides that, he doesn't learn anything that Pavel couldn't have told him.
>>
>>956587
He learned that CIA knows nothing.
>>
>>956592
He only learned that from Dr. Pavel. Not from CIA.
>>
>>956599
But CIA's behaviour reveals that he hasn't got a clue what is going on and doesn't really know much about Bane or the sophisticated capabilities he commands.
>>
>>956619
There isn't anything in the scene that betrays CIA's motives. He asks several questions, and when he asks Bane about his master plan, it isn't cause he cares to know, it's cause he's mocking him.

The plane is completely necessary because Bane had CIA and Pavel on the ground. They could've easily gotten the drop on CIA's men.

So fucking catchy. I fucking love that video man. It was basically Baneposting's swan song. It was the last major epic maymay that came out as Baneposting was finally dying down - and it ended up being the biggest youtube video of all with 1m+ views. I'm actually nostalgic for those days on /tv/ they were fucking hilarious.

First saw TDKR in 2012 with my dad and I'll never forget at the end of the plane scene he said "what the fuck.." under his breath. Everything about that scene is just over the top silly

Went to see Deadpool with some normie friends the other day. I hadn't slept the night before and was all delirious so internet sense of humour was playing up irl. When we were going home we ended up talking about TDKR and I brought up the four key lines of the plane scene while laughing:

>If I pull that off will you die?
>It would be extremely painful
>You're a big guy
>For you

I was laughing my ass off while saying it and I explained to them how fucking retarded it was, doing the Bane impression and everything. They started laughing at it, too, just as much as I was. I think this shit tends to fly over most peoples' heads but if you point it out to them they realise just how stupid it is. When I saw the scene myself for the first time I thought it was dumb (but dumb as is typical of Nolan's shitty movies) and that was it. Then I came over to /tv/ and saw the shitposting frenzy it was creating and realised just how poignantly terrible it actually was. I mean, if this shit makes complete non-autist normies laugh, free from any meme culture or intervention from /tv/, then there really does have to be something very off with it.

Hold on to your autism

>Why would Bane let himself get caught? He already had Dr. Pavel assuming Masketta Man was in cahoots with him. If Masketta Man wasn't in on the plan, why were the restraints so shitty?
>Why did CIA and soldiers not check the restraints?
>When CIA says "The flight plan I just filed with the agency list... only one of you" it's an obvious bluff that Bane calls him on ("Why would you shoot a man before throwing him out of a plane?" because obviously CIA is taking them all in). Later on in the scene, however, Bane acts as if CIA was telling the truth ("They expect one of us in the wreckage brother!").
>Why didn't CIA just wait until they landed for the negotiation? Why right then and there, on the plane, with a critical hostage?
>How would putting some of Dr. Pavel's blood in a random dead body make anybody think Dr. Pavel was dead?
>The plane and the corpses were riddled with bullet holes. It wouldn't take the agency more than a minute to realize the crash wasn't an accident.
>Why did the pilots make no attempt to maneuver away?

The scene wasn't originally in the movie. It was only written and shot at the last minute so Nolan could shoot it with a special IMAX camera and show off the camera's fidelity to potential investors. Watch the movie without the scene and it actually makes more sense; Bane's introduction was supposed to be in the sewers, when he's covered in shadows and turns to his minions.
>>
>>964975
Spoken like a true bane poster
This scene is simply amazing
The more you watch it the more you will learn and suffer at the same time
Its the masterpiece of our century

>It was only written and shot at the last minute so Nolan could shoot it with a special IMAX camera and show off the camera's fidelity to potential investors.

That actually makes a lot of sense, combined with Nolan's lack of understanding emotional tone.
>>
>>964975
>so Nolan could shoot it with a special IMAX camera and show off the camera's fidelity to potential investors
No dummy "the big guys" approved of the final product and Nolan added that special encrypted scene as a secret for us to find out about the hidden society of bug guys who control the world
Did you seriously believe the IMAX bullshit that the big guys forced him to say?

Imagine the movie with this as Bane's first scene.
>>
>>965002
I don't know, my guess is that they intended to put in a plane crash at the start of the movie because during the movie they do mention that Pavel died in a plane crash, I don't know whether they intended it to be a big scene with Bane, as well as being shot on IMAX.

http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/christopher-nolans-favorite-sequence-from-his-movies-is-the-airplane-kidnapping-scene-from-the-dark-knight-rises-20150421

While the mechanics of Christopher Nolan's films can be divisive, there's no denying that he's is one of the best at enacting spectacle on the big screen —his achievements as such include the docking sequence in his most recent "Interstellar" to the sleight-of-hand in "The Prestige" to the tilted hallway fight of the mind-bending "Inception." During a talk last night at the Tribeca Film Festival hosted by Bennett Miller, Nolan was asked to choose which of his blockbuster sequences was his favorite. And he selected the pretty terrific opening airplane kidnapping scene from "The Dark Knight Rises."

“It took us about two days in Scotland," he explained about the sequence, which you can watch below. "And it was an incredible sort of coming together of months and months of planning by a lot of different members of the team who worked for months rehearsing these parachute jumps and wind walking, all these different things… The visual effects work in the sequence is very minimal… I was really amazed by what the team we had put together had achieved using very sort of old-fashioned methods, in a way. I was very proud of the way that came together.”
