Go read through Evageeks or just watch a few explanation videos on Youtube. Eva can be pretty abstract at times in it's presentation but it's actually pretty straightforward once you kind of have the bigger picture pieced together.

i prefer the old ones personally. I generally enjoy seeing things reimagined, but I feel like almost everything they changed in the rebuilds was for the worst. What I found terrifying about Ramiel originally was how was this creepy static diamond shape that just hovered around. The rebuilds made him this over the top transforming thing. It just seems less interesting to me. Also the laser blast is now even more EXTREEAAMME!!! Because more EXTREMEEEE means more drama right? I dunno. With the few shots he took in the original.. like showing a huge building melt like thin plastic packaging held up to a cigarette lighter, and watching shinji boil in the LCL was pretty fucking terrifying. I don't see why the new scenes are improved from a dramatic point of view. Just feels like Anno has gone the Lucas route of substituting money and computing power for actual storytelling and creative merit.

I only found out last year that giant naked rei sends out school girl rei drones to collect people's souls across time, and one of them is sent back in time to episode 1, which is the Rei shinji sees before the third angle appears.
