seems like it had a good lock twice- yeah F-22 is definitely heavy. US disclosed that during the early stages that their F-16 were able to beat them multiple times in mock dog fights. I dont know how those scenarios really start, either by putting the F-22 at disadvantage and letting them get close? either way in all the mock fights that the F-22 lost is due to the opponent being able to "merge" with them and all bets are off if the other plane is lighter and more agile.

Pretty sure rules of engagement often require a pilot to close to visual range and identify the target before firing, so that's why dogfights often start with a fast head on pass. That's where it misses out. Either way - dogfighting isn't even what most of these planes do anymore. They mostly need close air support aircraft, which is what actually wins wars.

As for the agility and tracking in the mountains it's pretty bullshit. And missiles don't have a continuous burn like that, same for in mountain radar tracking. Few if any SAM are self illuminating.

There is a real world missile that fires tungsten spikes at a target a near hypersonic speeds from the missile. But it's american made not russian and not a SAM. I always thought it was for anti ship.

pilots loved this plane, surprisingly agile, and could really take a beating, there's a story about one losing a wing to a missile and still landing safely on its carrier
>>
>>796325

Are you sure?

It was once part of the rules of war that they had to visually identify targets, like definitely in the 50s. Somehow I ended up thinking they had changed that.

Like, I remember learning that at an air and space museum, and it was in the context of the F-4 Phantom being the first America Jet in combat that had no machine gun, and had radar. The F-4 Phantom was designed with a combat technique of hitting targets from far away with missiles, which violated the rules of war at the time. But that was like 50 years ago, and its not like we've stepped back from that technique. Having to approach and then visually identify targets seems infeasible in modern aerial combat.

Not true, anti-air warheads are continuous-rod warhead. A bundle of steel rods are aranged into a cylinder and have alternating ends welded together on both ends. When an explosive in the center is detonated, the rods expand, flexing around the welds until at their maximum extension form a steel hoop traveling at hyper sonic speeds. This is enough to cut through control surfaces and cause maximum damage to air frames.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continuous-rod_warhead

There is no amount of "over pressure" that can effect an aircraft traveling at supersonic speeds, by their very existence they will outrun any pressure wave produced by an explosion.

Looks like they're both turning hard, then the F-22 and his pursuer (the Rafale) enter a steep climb. When the F-22 is kind of hovering in air at the top of his climb (shortly before the Rafale pilot starts getting low speed warnings) he has a clear guns solution with deflection included. Had him dead to rights with that one, though to the F-22s credit he was already turning sideways with post-stall maneuvering to slip the sights.

>>795365
>>796325

The F-22 can dogfight just fine - the F-4 Phantom prevailed in close fights with little MiG-17s multiple times because the pilots knew how to play to the plane's strengths. The F-22 is a far better balanced aircraft than the Phantom was, too. Learning how to use the plane, however, is a tough task that requires a lot of dissimilar air combat training like in that video. All the 5th gen magic in the world can't change the fact that the margins of victory in air combat are extremely narrow; only by repeatedly pushing the aircraft to its limits can the pilots truly exploit it to come out on top.
>>
>>796325
>Pretty sure rules of engagement often require a pilot to close to visual range and identify the target before firing, so that's why dogfights often start with a fast head on pass.

Fighter planes have used high-tech long-range cameras for years now to alleviate that issue - the first (cockpit integrated) long range camera system was in the F-14, IIRC, and the "sniper" sensor pod includes that functionality too (and that's been integrated into the F-35, now.)

The "Merge" is the traditional way any old-fashioned dogfight begins - when both parties are aware of each other (neither one has gained surprise advantage, which is what accounts for most air-to-air kills in history) and they're both trying to engage each other. Both planes will jockey to open up lateral or vertical separation, to gain enough space to swing onto the enemies tail with a turn, for example, so it's always of benefit for the defender to maneuver to guarantee a head-on pass from almost zero distance to negate whatever advantage the other guy's seeking. Both pilots will probably avoid taking a head-on snapshot, because the other guy can take a snapshot too and a game of chicken with cannons is, at best, a 50/50 chance of victory - you want to point your guns at him from behind, where he can't shoot back! Some pilots will habitually make a tiny barrel-roll or jink as they close to ensure the enemy won't nail them with a head-on attack.

Thus, both planes blast past each other with almost no separation, and the instant they cross they have "merged" and can begin maneuvering hard for advantage. It's the theoretical "all things equal" starting point for air combat, and shows up in real life often enough to be considered.

>US disclosed that during the early stages that their F-16 were able to beat them multiple times in mock dog fights.
Only when they heavily handicapped the F-22. Same with the Rafale. They basically said "for this exercise, we're going to completely remove the primary thing that makes this fighter the most advanced fighter in the world."

Keep in mind that even when purposely compromising their stealth capability, the F-22 is still the better dogfighter thanks mostly due to thrust vectoring, which basically no 4th or 4.5th generation fighters have.
>>
>>830346
Can't speak to the rafale video, but in the simulation with german typhoons, the test was specifically dogfighting. The Germans said that in more realistic simulations, they couldn't even get near the F-22s with being targeted, but claimed that they were evenly matched in a dogfight. The thing is, in actual combat, a stealth fighter should never be involved in a dogfight. You'll see them so much farther away than they'll see you, that you'd have to be an idiot or out of munitions to not win.

Also consider the fact that in all of these stories you here, the Americans are never interviewed. Basically, we have a lot of claims from one only, with almost no actual information.

What is really amazing, though, is that such a hefty aircraft CAN dogfight. Unlike the F-35, which absolutely cannot dogfight against 4.5 generation fighters, the F-22 is at least an even match for anything out there right now. At least based on what we know so far. It will be even better if they ever install those upgrades they promised, then backed out of, then promised again. No one can really be certain until a large scale conflict occurs. Which is unlikely. If the F-22 every get into air combat, it'll probably be against some monkey model 4th generation fighters that haven't updated their avionics in three or four decades.

If you want a real take-away, it's this: nobody knows shit. The media sure as hell doesn't, and we don't have enough information to speculate that wildly either. Many people on every side will brag, but it's all meaningless.

it depends on the scope you view it at.
rafale could get a gun kill, but it lost all its energy which means its as good as dead.
>>
>>796365
It's from a 2009 exercise between US and French pilots in the UAE. In the WVR guns only training (which that video is from) the Raptor and Rafale each took one round and four were draws. The French claim that if they were allowed MICA's they would have scored several more kills, but by the same measure the Raptors would have had AIM-9X's and could presumably claim the same.

I hate to tell you this but it's not great, it's only advantage over F-86, CL-13, MiG-15bis etc is its topspeed. If you don't have an energy advantage all you can do is run.

No wonder this guy downed 5 of them in less than 1 minute while flying an F-86F, the Hunter was a good export ground attacker, not so much a fighter.

You know I always wondered how the alien's shields would hold up if they just dropped a fuckmassive weight onto the thing. The US Air Force experimented with several kinds in the mid 1900s and they were all fairly devastating despite lacking any kind of explosive.

Good old rock, nothing beats rock.

They can do something similar but at a much shallower angle. The aircraft still needs lift not to just fall like a brick.

It has to refuel in the air because the gas tank doesn't actually seal at ground level. Only under extreme heat from cruising does it all expand and close up.

Those planes are freaking made of magic.
>>
>>789047
Fuckin KC-10 ass gucci bullshit.
>>
>>878120
The KC-135s that could refuel SR-71s had a modified fuel system to accommodate the special fuel that the Blackbird required, without contaminating the standard fuel that the Stratotanker uses.

The Cold War was such a neat time for advances in aviation.
>>
>>797552
what am i hearing first the gun or the rounds hitting?
>>
>>857893
Funfact. SR 71 pilots were not trained in evasive maneuvers. This was because the plane's agility was rather poor. Instead, pilots were just instructed to "speed up" to outrun missiles and pursuers. That's how fast those fuckers were.
