Yeah, that's actually what they're doing, it's a system generally referred to as C-RAM, which, if I'm not mistaken, stands for counter rocket, artillery and mortar. There's a few different ones and as far as I know it's originally inspired by a similar type of cannon used on ships to destroy rockets. That one is called Phalanx I think.

Basically, it's completely automatic (there's a German version called Nächstbereichsschutz MANTIS which operates with two different tracking systems at once, even) and it shoots a shit fucking ton of rounds in basically no time, I think somewhere around 75 per second, all of which are high explosive tracer rounds which explode once the tracer runs out so they don't damage anything on the ground.

It's spray and pray, honestly. It works because of it all being HE, having a high velocity and because there's so fucking much of it and it helps the AI can calculate the path of the tracked object.

I think the system usually has rounds for around 20 seconds of non-stop shooting, although obviously it doesn't fire that much at once.
Also, and this is just something I heard, apparently it can lock on to birds on accident too. I imagine they just vanish should something like that fire at them.

I HATE that sound - but I have to put up with it for the same reason as this guy.

a lot of people dont know this.
I was being sold a pair of headphones once and the guy stated that because they were 7.1 they had 7 speakers in them so they had better surround sound.
This isnt necessarily true, you can get surround sound with 2.0 stereo.
This is because sound location is determined by your brain not based on actual source location, but tiny time dilation between sound reaching one ear and then the other, therefore it is possible to simulate 3d with the right mic setup.
this is why sometimes when you are playing a video game and hear something to the right of you it doesnt quite sound right, this is because the sound is reaching your ears at the same time but quieter in one ear, which confuses your brain.
The way good 'binaural' sound is recorded is with 2 microphones, positioned where your ears would be and recording independantly. This setup maintains the time dilation and therefore keeps the sound 3d.
Check out the Virtual Barbershop for a good example. (use stereo headphones and close your eyes) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUDTlvagjJA
for more you could check out the Virtual Interrogation Chamber

yee "surround headphones" are bullshit. All you need is a recording that preserves the phase of the sound sources.

I fucking hate that no videogame ever makes use of this. They just change the volume of something on the left and right channel to indicate its placement. That works with speakers, but I dare to say most people use headphones, and it will sound shitty on them. You need to delay a signal coming from the right a slight bit on the left channel, just calculate the extra distance it'd travel to your ear, divide by the speed of sound (~343 m/s) and there you got your little delay.

If you don't believe this, test it on your own: Open up Audacity or a sound editor of your like, take a mono signal, duplicate it on the left and right channel and mess with small delays of a few samples.

You can do a little better than that.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head-related_transfer_function
Googling "HRTF VST plugin" or "binaural VST plugin" should give you some stuff that works in Audacity, although REAPER may be better because it lets you do envelopes. The plugin used to make that eurobeat webm is this one:
http://www.dklingler.com/projects/spatializer

Also, people seem to be getting interested in this technology again, because of the whole VR thing. There's a bunch of talks about it on youtube.

Being former artillery, i doubt it. You race to set up and it's often over.

It would be better without the eurobeat. I prefer engine sound over music.

EPIC has been going ham on their sound system for UE4, at one point it was bare bone basics and didn't even support sound volume based on distance. People asked them what the hell they're doing and EPIC responded by hiring a sound engineer that was told to just improve on it and he has added what you're talking about and is trying to improve it as much as possible. Witcher 2 had support for it but it was hardcoded in the sound and could not be changed during run time.
