The first half is episodic, with most episodes not bearing much connection to each other, and with only a few loosely woven overarching plot threads going on. You may find yourself getting bored.
Hold out. Because the second half is GOD TIER.
It turns into the epic, nietzschian struggle of Hachi against himself, to become the übermensch and join humanity's first manned mission to Jupiter. Meanwhile, a terrorist organization is trying to sabotage the United Nations' spacefaring operations as a political statement against their military interventions in the third world. As all this is going on, Ai is constantly wrestling with Hachi, trying to convince him to be selfless instead of selfish, to believe in LOVE instead of greatness… and it all culminates in the single most gutwrenching cliffhanger I've ever seen, at the end of episode 24.
This webm will not convey the full effect of the cliffhanger, because you have not watched 24 episodes of Ai's characterization all leading up to this moment.
The last three episodes of this show left me emotionally wrecked.

You know, I didn't really need to delete my first post. I hardly gave away any more information in it than I did in my second. All I did was give a basic teaser synopsis of the major plotlines in the second half of the show, and an explanation for why the cliffhanger in that webm was so painful (since a casual anon might not understand if they didn't know Ai's personality).
I didn't give away anything from the last two episodes. I didn't give away what happens to Ai (or why I had to pause episode 26 to lie down and bawl my eyes out for a while). I feel that the amount of information I have given is the perfect amount for a person to be maximally enticed to watch the show.
And people SHOULD watch the show. I say without equivocation that it's the best anime I've ever watched, even if, as I mentioned before, the first half is a little slow paced.

ATLA had pacing and writing problems all over the place, and it only gets worse in the third season. Invader Zim is edgelord trash, and EEnE is ok but far from the best even to come out of Cartoon Network. Teen Titans is ok, which considering it's capeshit is an accomplishment, but it's still thoroughly spanked by BtAS and Batman Beyond, both of which are better than pretty much everything he mentioned.
