It's more annoying to try and run it with OpenRC. A lot of packages/things don't work well (or at all) with OpenRC now. I've been using latest ~amd64 systemd for quite a while now.

If you mix too many unstable packages with stable packages, or alter USE flags too much, you can run into some issues like this. You have to be able to understand the basics of the USE flag system, how to edit the package.accept_keywords and package.use files, and how to read output of portage.
Sometimes Gentoo devs just fuck up though, and it's not your fault. As a user you're expected to be partially responsible for your system, and be able to fix some issues on your own, quite a bit moreso than binary-based distros.
