windows labels can easily be done through blackboxbar, there's an inbuilt clock with it but I don't know if you can actually configure its time format, but that can be arranged by using bbInterface.
I use bbinterface for both my clock and nowplaying "widgets", but the now playing actually relies on a moonscript script running in the background using bro@ms as broadcast message to the specific Frame. only because I use mpd, though, and like Rob said you can easily do that through Rainmeter if you're using another music player like Foobar.

start by downloading stylish and finding nice themes for firefox, 4chan, etc.
crack windows and get a VS (assuming youre a windows user)
download bblean
or you could just use AHK scripts
download rainmeter get foobar 2k and a skin
try to get a color scheme going, make it look nice.
That's basically what you should concentrate on, but it wouldnt hurt at all to check nami-tan lurk some and ask questions about posters whose desktops you like.
it wont be an instant transformation or an overnight one.

How so? I haven't tried using it, but the way I have mine set up, I have the two buttons under the clock set up to switch between two wallpapers - isn't that simpler? Otherwise I'd have to define the entire wallpaper with rainmeter image meters, and I seriously doubt that's nicer.
