This is almost as bad as Mega Man. Everywhere you go is literally the 7th layer of hell.

how do people play this?
>>
They git gud.

Seriously maybe retro games aren't for you. It's a lot of trial and error, you need to make mistakes, find out where you go wrong and correcting that.
>>
>>3005071
>They git gud.
cliché response, but ultimately true.
You're supposed to learn from your mistakes and gradually get better. Many platformers imply that rushing through is the way to win, but in Metroid, you have to start from the bottom and creep your way carefully until you're good enough. You will get lost, but if you've got a pen and paper you can draw your maps.

So again, git gud. To git gud, have patience. To get patience, have motivation to win. To get motivation to win, think about the pixel titties in the end.

By not being bad, none of the NES Megaman games are that hard outside parts of MM 1.

By pressing the "A" button on your control pad, you can make Samus JUMP over the OBSTACLES and HAZARDS in his path.

Metroid is pretty rough around the egdes.

Super Metroid is basically a remake of it for the SNES and is better.
>>
>>3005036

it was a part of the times, difficulty was a sign of quality due to limited graphics. btw can i just say this image captcha is the most frustrating thing ive ever seen on the internet.

pretty much all older games have trial and error for the most part your meant to lose and get game overs so that you master them at some point. in the end it is a fulfilling experience.
>>
>>3005036
Classic Mega Man series isn't even that hard, no idea why people use it as a parameter for difficulty. If anything, I'd say that it belongs to the easier half of the NES library. If you want to see what a hard game looks like, play Mega Man Zero.

I've never finished the original Metroid. I should at some point. Only turn off for me was having to farm for health powerups. They really should start you with half of your current max health instead of 30 or whatever.

I don't think women who masquerade as a man to get respect and avoid being raped actually IDENTIFY as male. This is actually a gray area that I'm literally unsure about. Is it about a person's public gender identity or about their self-dentity?

captcha: edgegrove avenue
>>
>>3005847
I admit I was baiting, but I agree with you. A person may conceal their true self-identity for personal reasons such as safety, credibility, among others. So, for example, when people say Naoto from [NOT RETRO] is trans, I think that's pure bullshit. Was Emily Bronte actually a trans man, too? Obviously there's no way to know, but I find it highly doubtful.

There is no good reason why you don't start with full health in Metroid.

>>
>>3005604
>Classic Mega Man series isn't even that hard
He didn't say Mega Man series. Mega Man the game is pretty ridiculous in it's difficulty before they toned it way down in 2 and kept it manageable from there.

Still, Metroid isn't THAT bad. Its not like it has enemies you can't kill that alter their speed when you step on their platform or hazards that toggle on and off so fast you really have to get the timing down. The only thing really ridiculous about it is the need to farm energy if you die, and that's only if you can't reach an e-tank or start in Torian near the Metroids that drop a ton of health and missiles.
>>
>>3005897

if you're a gamer of even moderate skill, energy should be no issue Metroid. starting with full health you might as well just make her invincible.
>>
>>3005913
You don't need to farm in Torien for Mother Brain. The Metroids drop shittons of energy and missiles, more than enough to manage Mother Brain.
>>
>>3005925
Depends on how fickle the Metroids are. I've seen them drop tons of energy and then get stingy on missiles.
>>
>>3005913
Fair enough, I agree that the first Mega Man is hard. Not by any means one of the hardest NES games, though.
>>
>ITT: /v/ babies who think the original Mega Man and Metroid are super hard.
>>
>>3005691
i know this is bait but for the good folks at home i want to explain that this idea came from a developer questionnaire about 'what do you know about samus that no one else does?' this is where we got the infamous 'only i know where her birthmark is' comment, another dude said 'samus is actually a shemale'. pretty clearly a joke
>>
>>3005036
>It's bad because it's hard
>>
>>3005036
I have not finished it, so I shouldn't really talk about the difficulty, but still.

General common enemies are easy, as long as you figure out their pattern.

Secret passages can be a pain in the ass to find and might make you drop the game if youre not patient enough.

Platforming isnt too hard, at least not in the beginning parts I played.

Dunno about bosses, havent got to them.

Most things are intuitive. The only part that wasnt for me were red doors. I got rocket, so I figured I had to shoot rocket at the door to open it. I did and it stayed closed. I did it again and the same. I figured I needed something else and started looking around. I found nothing and dropped game in boredom.
Only after about a year later I read that I had to fire not one, not two, not even three, but all FIVE consecutive rockets I had at hand to open that damned door. Thats bullshit. I picked up game, gotten somewhere further, but got bored with exploring same looking corridors over and over just to get to the place I cant get throu just because I dont have power necessary.
I dropped it again and havent played to this day.

I guess if environments were more differentiated it would be fun to explore, but those copy-pasted corridors are making me tired and bored.

Great idea, but a bit too monotonous for me.
Exploration should be exciting, not boring.
If it had a little more flavor too it, which I guess later games in the series had(dont know, havent played them), It would be just right.

I heard lots of good about Super Metroid, Fusion and so on, So I guess they did get better.
>>
>>3005078
>but if you've got a pen and paper you can draw your maps

This is why Zero Mission is better, in my opinion. I'm all for "gittin gud" and all that, and I like games that involve skill. But once the paper needs to come out it's just tedious. There's nothing fun about having to trace every single step you take onto paper.
>>
>>3006530
some people really like making their own maps, it's kind of a callback to classic rpgs. there's a metroid hack with an automap. i'd like zero mission so much more if it didn't do the chozo statue hand holding, without that it'd be nearly perfect.
>>
>>3005192
The first Mega Man is the only one I have never completed, and I am 36.
>>
>>3005141
But Super Metroid is linear as fuck compared to Metroid, and just because it is set in some of the same areas doesn't make it a remake; besides as the narrative goes it's a sequel (you enter areas that you cleared out in the first game).
>>3005752
One of the first weapon power-ups you find is the long beam, which allows your projectiles to go on indefinitely.
>>3006681
Same, even on the age. Mega Man 1 I always thought was bullshit because it had the clunky shit controls, but none of the quality that later games in the series had, so I never developed the desire to beat it.
>>
>>3005525

I know it's a story sequel. But in actuality it's more of a remake. They easily could have made it not a sequel.
>>
>>3006530
You could just keep track of your position in your head. It's what I did.

The only total bullshit the original metroid to me was how your supposed to get to Ridley's lair in Norfair.
Other than that the game was fine and playable, if a bit tedious in some ways.
>>
>>3005847
No, that would be a transvestite.

Famous women like Anne Bonny and Joan of Arc, who wore men's clothes and assumed masculine roles, are not trans.
>>

Transvestite = trans. Clue's in the word.
>>
>>3008019

There is so much bait in this thread.
A crossdresser is not the same as a trans man/woman because one is just about clothes, the other one is about your gender identity, you can look it up.
... shitlords
>>
what exactly is the agenda behind coming to /vr/ and shitposting about metroid all the time?
for what possible purpose are these constant threads?
>>
>>3008080
Then say transgender. Transvestite and transgender are different things, but they're both trans.
>>
>>3006530

Then people would bitch that it's too linear. Back when I first bought the remake of Zero mission for GBA, I threw my action replay in with all of Samus's abilities from the start and got sooooo fucking lost after space jumping through a shit load of walls.
>>
>>3008019
Did you spend English wanking yourself into a coma? "Trans-" means "Across" which is how we get terms like "Transpacific" and "Transport", while "Vestire" means "Clothes", which is where we get terms like "Vestment".

Are you saying that "Transpacific" means you identify as an entire ocean? Go back to school, you failed the language you speak.
>>
>>3008117
No, transvestites don't actually identify as being the gender they're pretending to be. A transvestite male is still a man, identifies as one, and lives like one when he's not dressed like a woman. He has no gender dysmorphia and statistically is probably heterosexual.

Are you retarded? I'm not trying to say that a transvestite male identifies as a woman. But both the word "transgender" and "transvestite" shorten down to "trans". You could very justifiably use the word "trans" to refer to somebody who dresses up as a woman, without meaning that they identify as one. You need to be specific and use the full word because just "trans" on its own could mean all sorts of things.
>>
The fuck? What are you retards doing contaminating the thread with your gender issues discussion? Go back to Tumblr with your filth.

You can make it fun, however, if you play with a 1986 mindset, sit down for a weekend with graph paper and a determined soul.

metroid has true exploration. it's basically dropping you in, giving you a few close by ugprades and saying "ok you're on your own."

while super metroid is in my to 10 games of all time, i will say it is more linear than the original metroid, as you are being lead to a region one after another, which some exploration mixed in.
>>
>>3006501
>Only after about a year later I read
Metroid is from an era where games had instruction manuals that tell you stuff like this, because there was no room in the game for hand-holding tutorial interludes.

If you were playing without the manual, then you were playing an incomplete game.
