Baku Baku is a poor mans Puzzle Fighter (exact fucking same gameplay, but with no counter attacks, so whoever throws the most blocks first will win).
It had wicked music though. I still listen to it from time to time. And the PAL disc had a kickass remix bonus track.
I'm glad survivors can't see the Killer's rank in the lobby
Every 20 rank shitter would probably quit the second they see someone with a low number.

Kingsley's Adventure last PSX game by Psygnosis.
>>3283582
For you
>>3283490
It was 20$ on release I think. Parents got this game at Costco (back when they sold games) for 10$ in like 2001 or 2002.
Still have the disc.
I fucking love this game so much. It's so amazing for a PSX game. It has so many game modes, from racing to king of the hill, and even golf.
Apparently, there's an unreleased dreamcast version of the game you can get as an ISO off of the internet. The game is under a different name though, as it was changed to Ball Breakers for the US release. Forgot the name, but if you search that up you should be able to find it. I think it starts with a Z.
>>3283740
Fucking great game

I disagree completely. Go to /v/ right now and look at that catalog.
The /vr/ shitposting is nothing in comparison.

>>3283137
Well, for a youngling like you who just arrive from youtube you might want to watch walk throughs of some Crash games.
Surprisingly good 3D platformer with a fantastic OST by Michael Giacchino.
>>3283479
CAN WE FUCKING STOP WITH THIS SHIT?!? PSX was a common abbreviation for the PlayStation back in its day, and it just so happens that Sony reused the name for a PS2/DVR combo that was only released in Japan. Now, we're on the fucking retro board, so the PS2 is off-topic, and therefore PSX = original Playstation here.
Anyway, I thought Space Shot was kinda fun. It's this crappy little shmup with bad voiceacting and cheesy 3D anime cutscenes.
>>3284709
My thoughts too.
Why do people flip out when someone uses the PSX name?
They are probably too young for this board.
>>3284713
I'm actually a 6th gen babby but at least I know a few things about /vr/. I was educated well by my parents and older peers.
>>3284720
Okay, well I still think it's silly that people only know the PSX name as the failed DVR/PS2 hybrid thing.
Back in the day, before I had dust all over me, the original Playstation was often called PSX.
The funny thing is that the DVR/PS2 thing was a failure and didn't make it out of Japan, and yet, that is what people seem to remember the PSX name by....anyway, whatever, let's move on.
My autism is flaring up.
>>3284725
Only time I ever saw it referred to as psx was after ps2 was announced and those small ps1s came out. It was ps1 up till then iirc. Or as my brothers and I called it piss s 1 because our facing cat pissed all over it and it was sticky and stained by the urine. Had to massage the eject button back out of the hole every time we opened it.
>>3284741
That really sucks.
I'm allergic to cats, so thankfully I never had to deal with a cat piss stained console.

Jade Cocoon and The Unholy War
I much prefer them than AAA titles
Vampire Hunter D
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwCWyOTs2R8
It's Onimusha or Devil May Cry before their time.
Pretty unique gameplay for this type of game where you have to play defense, you can't always just rush and hit the enemy mindlessly, you often have to wait for the right time to attack, wait for his attack, dodge, and then hit.
You have to keep balance between the HP meter, the VP meter which is strength and the MP meter which gives a good flow to the gameplay and rewards not getting hit.
Also great atmosphere and music, fun controls, and I personally love the voice acting. I think it's some of the best of the era.
Story is kinda like Resident Evil with Barry and Rebecca: doing certain things or going through certain places in a particular order will give you different cutscenes and can have an impact on the ending.
Just make sure you turn off enemy autolock in the options, that thing will make you lose.
>>3284869
>It's Onimusha or Devil May Cry before their time.
there's also rising zan
>>3284874
Or Soul Of The Samuraî
I enjoyed that one but, although it is faster paced, it's more limited than Vampire Hunter D and hit detection is sometimes off (especially when playing as Lin)

>>3283137
HOLY SHIT OP YOURE A LEGEND.
I remember reading about this game in a magazine back when I was a kid, but I never played the game or remembered the name.
I'm totally giving this a go.
>>3284878
Came here to mention this.
>>3284869
The movie is fantastic, i hope the game is as good as you are describing it.
>>3287649
Here are a few tips:
- Turn off the autolock system. You WILL want to be able to lock and unlock onto enemies at will for movement.
- The game is all about balancing the 3 meters: HP, VT and MP.
VT is your strength. The more it's full, the stronger your hits are. When you hit someone with your sword, VP increases; but it decreases with time and doesn't increase if you use attack items or magic.
- For MP you have 3 magics, which matter a lot because one of them completely heals you; and the others are very helpful when you are surrounded by enemies. To refill MP you have to swallow enemies, however they can only be swallowed when they only have a few HP left.
So the whole thing is about keeping a balance, because if you swallow enemies too much you'll perform less hits and therefore your VP meter will not really increase, etc
Layout of the castle is more or less symmetric. Always keep a look at the map and try to remember colours of places when two have the same layout.
It's a great game really once you get the hang of the controls. For most enemies, you'll want to learn patterns, don't rush to attack first, wait for them to attack, dodge, and then you can hit.
Arc the lad collection
All the games you've posted have aged like vinegar, yet this gem still stands strong if you play it now.
I even argue that it's better than final fantasy tactics.

>>3288017
still it's better than most of the titles posted here
Maybe its not so hidden but i really enjoyed Kings Field games.
They were really ahead of its times with its large metroidvania-esque world, fpp view, no loading times and creppy horror atmosphere.
It was also very challenging , not like most jrpgs on psx.
>>3288009
>aged
Anyway, what's great about Arc the lad? It's just another JRPG, I'd rather play a Megaten game, or dozens of other more obscure titles when it comes to JRPG. But maybe I'm missing something, so sell Arc the lad to me.

Ive seen this game discussed a couple times before so I don't know if it's exactly a "hidden" gem
butGabe Logan runs like a girl
Some games that I don't see brought up often:
>Herc's Adventures
Diablo-like game with co-op, tons of usable items and bosses like the Hydra, Minotaur, Talos, and more.
>Monkey Magic
Awesome 2-D platform/action/puzzle game. You have basic attacks, but you also get spells such as power, shrink, ice, and fire. You can choose to either use these powers on yourself or other objects, in order to beat enemies or solve puzzles.
>Space Invaders
Yes, everyone knows Space Invaders, but the PS1 version has co-op, special weapons, and bosses.
>The Unholy War
One of the coolest fighting/strategy games. It's 3-D, with a variety of different creatures and machines to fight with. You can verse a 2nd player, or play the Strategy mode, which involves moving characters across a segmented map and taking over energy sources and enemy bases.
>>3294408
Acknoledging Monkey Magic as a very fun platformer with puzzles.

Wow, I knew that technosoft published the genesis version of Devil's Crush, but I'll be damned if this isn't almost a cutesy sequel. Naxat had to have had their hands in this, the layouts are shot for shot how they made them, especially those bonus stages.
Shame the sequel was such dogshit.

This game is a ghetto hybrid of Die Hard, Resident Evil and a cheap 90's anime, but it's got some fun aspects (and the combat is surprisingly decent). Also, the characters are so weird that it's almost worth checking it out for that.
>>3297012
Played this.
Honestly I enjoyed it but gameplay is only decent at best, nothing like Dino Crisis 2 or Parasite Eve 2. Controls and hit detection aren't perfect, but the worst are the full 3D boss fights....
They shouldn't have made melee combat such a big focus imo. Gunplay is more fun, but only so limited....
You might want to give Deep Freeze a try. It's hard as balls though, could never beat the game one easy.

criminally underrated. Panel de Pon lineage.
>>3298117
Not only have I played this game, I conquered it. Collected all statues in the Black Mage's basement, finished all sidequests and rebuilt dungeons, forged the most powerful possible equipment in the game, and crammed my inventory full of the most rare items, like Bahamut and Carbuncle summon stones, Pink tags and Divide cards.
Used tons of Life nuts, Wisdom seeds and grinding sessions to max out all my stats. I have no idea where spell levels cap, but all of mine are just above level 50. I'm guessing 99? That's a bit overkill though. My spells inflict nearly as much damage as summons as is.
Oh, I haven't been KO'd once.
Crusaders isn't bad for what it is. The plot and setting just aren't particularly inspired. It's nonetheless one of the closest things the PS1 got to Elder Scrolls.
It's also dirt cheap at the moment. I found the game and strategy guide for $8.
>>3295585
I'm not paying $100+ to import it, and all the rips I've found online are shit. I wasted two Taiyo Yuden discs trying to burn a working copy of this. There's too much audio stutter. Goddamn scene kids. I'm not wasting my time with ISOZone or Emuparadise again.

Second on the King's Field Trilogy. I've been playing through the first game (J) on my PSP and if you emulate and tweak the controls, its gameplay, and even to a degree the aesthetic, holds up great.

Deeply flawed but still very cool. The amount of hours I spent with this game is comparable to the biggest rpg's on the system.

this
do people really say playstation X or Pee-Essex? Exactly. It's PS1 for a reason. jesus. Or PSOne if you want to hang out with that white model kids.

>>3298347
>Elder Scrolls mentioned
Really? I don't expect exactly open world game but gameplay vids look nice. Is it non-linear? Is there lots of stuff to get, locations to explore?
I remember PSX being thrown around a lot in the game magazines before it came out. I don't recall it being used after release. It was just Play Station (yes, a space between Play and Station). PSX is kinda dumb. It's the 10th Playstation? It's Mega Man but with an X to denote a reboot even though the Playstation was the first? I don't really care, just wish I knew what it meant.
source: had EGM, Game Players, Game Pro, Tips n Tricks, Die Hard, and Next Generation magazine subscriptions when I was a kid.
Not sure I'd consider it a hidden gem per se, but the third installment in this series remains one of my favorite games. It has, however, nothing to do with the crux of the gameplay (the battle scenarios are tedious in a way that defies even most monster rpgs). What I love about that game is the presentation: the colors, the music, the story, even the transitions. It really is a beautiful package.
>>3301643
I still have that game! God, I still love it, too. It's got so many flaws, like you said. But man... it doesn't actually hold up any WORSE now than it did then.

So the first one was the better than 2 and 3 ?
I was late to the PlayStation party I played on n64 until my uncle loaned me his PlayStation when I was a teen had only driver and ff7 but spent most time playing driver I did play the PC version of driver and going back to the PS version it feels dated and limited probably due to the space on the disk.
Saved money by doing odd jobs bought Legend of dragoon and final fantasy tactics both were good games, bought my first non square RPG in the form of wild arms 2 played that quite a bit never beat raguragula tho.
Bought driver 2 wasn't bad but it didn't live up to the expectations that driver 1 was. Played the 2nd vigilante 8 but the copy I bought was fucked so that was short lived.
Bought a copy of 007 racing (currently playing) not bad so far.
Anyone remember the first gen PlayStation one had a pretty decent CD player mode and also you could stick certain games in a regular CD player and they had music on them.
Currently thinking of getting a couple more games that I played on the 64 for PlayStation.
>>3304801
The game sucks. It's one of the worst RPGs I ever played, but the presentation really is good.
Digimon World also have an adorable color palette and is a way better game.
>>3295645
Die Hard Trilogy is amazing. I never played it's sequel, but the original version is so much fun. I played a demo of it when I got my ps1 in 1996 and was hooked. My favorite was the light gun die hard 2 game. It had THE BEST music.
