In honor of today's GOG release of D, let's have a full motion video thread.

Surely not all FMV games were shit, right?
>>
The technique shines with Adventure Games like D, Myst or that one X Files title for the Play Station, and it can be a great gimmick a la Silpheed. I can also enjoy Dragons Lair clones for what they are.
>>
What was that FMV game where you drove a car through buildings and along canyon walls and stuff? That one was awesome.
>>
>>3263634
Sounds like Road Avenger.

I know it doesn't really count, but I loved the video-based world hub segments in The Neverhood; it was really cool being able to navigate a miniature/claymation environment in first person view

I unapologeticly love Sewer Shark

I just do. nothing you can say will make me believe the game isn't fun as fuck.
>>
If it counts, Phantasmagoria was pretty awesome, though that's a point-n-click whose environments are totally FMVs, sorta.

Of the "D-style" games, emulate Lunacy on the Saturn. It's shitty, like the rest of D-style games, but it's incredibly entertaining and campy. It's got some nice atmosphere behind the wooden and bizarre delivery and onerous puzzle/fetch quests.

lunacy = torico? unforgettable experience
>>
>>3263976
Yup. And yes, it's definitely a game that, for multiple reasons, you won't forget!

Beautiful graphics, music, and atmosphere, and then you have lines like

>"Ah so you must be the infamous traveler, Fred!"
>"All I know is that existence is droll."
>"So this place plays dirty tricks? I am the master of dirty tricks!"
>"Sir what happened to your arm?" "Moon tricks!"

The protagonist is a special case; I don't know anyone in media who has ever managed to cuck himself, with himself.

I get the feeling that Time Gal is not actually a fun game even by FMV games standards, but people like to pretend it is because it has some neat animation.
>>
>>3263661
Tex Murphy games are good.
But the only great FMV game is GK2: The Beast Within. Amazing how much Sierra improved over the ridiculous Phantasmagoria.
>>
>>3263913
I owned Sewer Shark as a kid. Packed with the Sega CD model 2. I will always appreciate the cheesy and hilarious acting in that game, especially with that fat guy..

I am so Happy to see arguably Kenjo Eno's biggest work brought to modern computers, I am hoping they get enemy zero and D2 going next. I actually own Enemy Zero on saturn, has a really cool holographic case.

Shame that he died though, the only other creator that I feel is still doing interesting work out of japan is Swery.
>>
>>3265624
Enemy Zero has a PC version so it's likely we could see it on GoG. D2 not so much.

>>3265606
You don't know what you're talking about until you've played Mansion Of Hidden Souls on SegaCD. It's like you can feel the machine struggling to render every frame. I love the game though (but the Saturn version, not so much...)
>>
>>3265624
The non-gog version works on modern computers too though.
>>
>>3265631
Might sound stupid, but I like owning the license/having the Drm free version through GoG.
>>
Gabriel Knight 2 was a masterpiece. Best FMV game I played.

I loved this game. It's as cheesy as you'd expect, but the horror setting makes the cheesiness work in a "so bad it's good" b-movie sort of way. I originally played the Sega CD version, but the PC version is better. There was a remastered re-release with better video quality than Sega CD or PC, but it dropped the save feature for passwords because it's a DVD game and I'm pretty sure it doesn't count as retro.
>>
>>3265630
>Enemy Zero has a PC version so it's likely we could see it on GoG.
I was thinking this the other day. The PC port download should be easy to find.

Enemy Zero is a really mixed game though. The maze levels (with no visual indicators to tell one hallway from the next), combined with the lack of map and insta-kill enemies can really drag the enjoyment of the game down. Especially by the end. I have no clue what they were thinking to have 3 floors of gigantic mazes one after the other, but it pissed me off so much. You have a "look up" button that is used precisely in one spot in the entire game (if you don't use it there, or don't even know you have it, it's insta-death). And dying often means repeating slooow investigation segments because of the limited saves.

I need to give D2 a try, but I am skeptical about its random battle elements.
>>
I just want to say that enemy zero is one underrated horror game
that game along with hellnight were amnesia before amnesia ever came out
too bad there were no pewdiepies around to popularize them

This had been on my 3DO to buy list for aged I just never got around to it.

Is this a pretty solid release?

Does it lose itself up its own as at the end like D2? ( I hope so)

It's basically the Dragon's Lair QTE style and FMV games got a lot better, but it's very entertaining to watch if nothing else. Same with Ninja Hayate.
>>
So, is D any good?

Yeah, I mean the cg looks dated and it's a little slow but the music and atmosphere are great.

No that's a prequel to D4
>>

If D, D2, D3 and D4 are all in the same universe why didn't they have vampires playing Ice Hockey in D3? Why are there no catgirls in D? Terrrible continuity, they need a reboot that links all these disparate elements.

Pure FMV super hero kino.
>>
>>3267601
how does that twist even factor into D2?
>>
>>3273510
Its rather boring as far as gameplay, a lot of areas you just walk FOREVER when it could easily be just a skip and a hop from person to person, otherwise, it'd make a neat B-Movie what with all the actors they piled in, Walken's the best as always, with David Patrick Kelly the second best
>>
>>3273637
D2 is not a direct plot sequel, more of a spiritual successor with the same "digital actress"
>>
>>3273584
The Japanese 3DO version has more content and is completely uncensored

All versions of D on the 3DO are uncensored, afaik. The story about how Eno accomplished that is quite hilarious.
>>
>>3279665
Only the 3DO ones right? Because I thought the Japanese one had a few different scenes.
>>
>>3279209
Riana Rouge, I think it was. Looks pretty bad from what I've seen of it.
