This is how you know it's fake. Also the TV stand looks a little newer, mid to late '90s.
And why is she playing as Luigi all by herself?
I actually used to do that because I preferred Luigi.

Although pic related is a pro shot, Vicki Witt here would go on to get a crew credit in Return of the Jedi.

At the risk of changing the tone too much, I came across this shot. At first I thought it was vintage but these poor Egyptians are just frozen in time. They're so poor they're living with their uncle in his tomb. Tombs are big with Egyptians and they're paid off for the LONG residency

I think there's always been about the same proportion of girls who legitimately like video games to ones who mainly use it as an affectation it's just that gaming in general blew up so much where you used to know 1 real girl gamer and 5 fakes now it's 5 real gamers and 25 fakes which seems worse but isn't really.

Totally. That looks like any typical chubby 12-13 year old boy.
>>
>>3186147
Sure, probably there's an even greater proportion of fakes on the guy side since it has a more positive perception but there's always been lots of young male real gamers so it doesn't seem like they're in any danger - although if /v/ is any indication there's a growing number of straight trolls in the community too.

Seriously. The person who first bought and played video games in my house was my mother. And we're not talking underage b& here. This is a thing that happened in the early 80s, and she's certainly not the only one.

I'll grant you that the industry has always been shit at marketing outside their core demographic of sex-crazed teenaged nerds and manchildren, though.

How did lines work in arcades anyway? Did people really put their quarters on the panel/against the bezel?
>>
>>3195453
I remember people just putting them into the game and there was usually a self regulated thing going on. When I went to bigger cities they did the quarter on the panel thing.
>>
>>3193728
this is reality right here

I remember in dorms everyone looked at you like you were jesus if you had a big TV
>>
>>3195453

Yeah, a quarter on the bezel meant "I got next."

On multiplayer games you'd put your quarter above the player you intended to take. eg: "I got Raph next."

I guess multiple people could line up quarters if there's more than one person waiting for a given game/player but I never really saw that happen. People would sooner go play another game than queue up behind more than one person.
>>
>>3195463
see that's what I was thinking, whenever I go to this one crowded barcade and I see a game I want is occupied, I just go play something else.

Granted that's also a freeplay everywhere place, my point is I would expect people to just steal the quarter(s). Though I guess in a big line that could mean getting beaten up by 4-5 guys.
>>
>>3195463

It also helped that lineups were the bane of operators. It meant more people in your arcade standing around NOT giving you money. If that was happening you can bet the operator would rotate games to fix that problem as quickly as possible.
>>
>>3195463
Oh they queued up. The coin racking is something that was inherited from bar games like pool, foosball and darts.
>>
>>3189287
And you're proud of that? Jesus Christ. Pathetic.
>>
>>3195471
>Though I guess in a big line that could mean getting beaten up by 4-5 guys.

When The Simpsons arcade came out, the machine was a mob-scene for several weeks at my movie theatre, with a crowd around it. People would just stand behind the players more or less in-line, and wait for people to run out of quarters. The sheer number of players meant that the game would be played until completion and the defeat of the final boss, then repeat through to completion, then again, then again...

everyone will just show up with exaggerated neon and fluor colors and other "I love 80s!" stuff bought at Hot Topic, people don't know what the 80s really looked like, the imagery of the 80s we have today is more connected to stuff like comics and cartoons rather than the real world and society in the 80s.

now remember that what you said is true for absolutely every other decade of the last century, and even the first one in this century. And it not only affects stuff like fashion, but also gaming. No matter how much we try, or how much respect we have for these games, we'll never be able to see them in the same light people of their era saw them. Even if we lived in that era, everything else changed.
Thorough research and dress-up is all we're left with.

Also, Martin still looks the fucking same, it's uncanny

that's what you youngins think. Most of the large machines don't exist anymore because they were destroyed when pinball was declared illegal in Chicago in 1979. The makers of Hercules just realized quickly enough what's up and hid the machines under O'Hare until the scare was over

Sorry if I wasn't being clear. When people were playing the NES there wasn't really much sentiment that "Man Atari was so much better" since it wasn't lack of imagination that was holding games back it was real hardware limitations. Some people like my dad felt "Atari is just as good" but nobody made arguments that it was better.

However, I personally did switch over to Atari once in a while to play a few games that I liked that weren't available on NES. Ghostbusters being the number one. It was available on Master System but I didn't know that and I didn't have a Master System anyway when I was still going back. I also played trackball games since NES didn't have one and I would play some paddle games notably Warlords when I would have slumber parties and people didn't want to take turns on the NES.

In my country, boys and girls both played video games about equally. Home consoles outside of Megadrive and, eventually, Playstation weren't popular at all, but arcades were packed with boys and girls playing in about equal number. The difference I noticed, even as a kid, was that girls tended to prefer cute-em-ups, maze chase and puzzle games more than boys did, though there was no shortage of girls playing Centipede, Galaga and Commando just as there wasn't with boys playing Mappy, Liquid Kids and Snow Bros.

I read, however, that the reason that video games skewed so drastically towards boys is because of how toy stores in the US were organised at the time. As I've heard it, when console gaming first arrived on American shores, toy stores were segregated, one half for boys, another for girls, a third for bikes and creative play (blocks/Lego, toy instruments and art toys like Spirograph and Etch-a-Sketch) and the last for infants and toddlers. Edutainment hadn't yet poisoned children's toys.

Toys R Us, Kiddie City and KB Toys, the three largest toy store chains in the US at the time, were trying to figure out where to put console gaming: it's not a bike or creative toy and it's not for infants, so it must be for one gender or the other, right? I mean... girls don't play with action figures and boys don't play with fashion dolls, right? Boys and girls clearly can't have the same toys... what do we do?! Well, lets cram it in the boy's aisles and hope it sticks.

And it did.

If you look at it, early video games weren't at all marketed or geared towards specific gender. That didn't start until the later mid 80s, even if by the early 80s, protagonists in video games were obviously male.

If you gimme some time, I'll try to find the source for that. I read it last summer and I might be able to refind that article.
>>
>>3196372
>If you gimme some time
no, post it immediately or your point is invalid
>>
>>3196372
Video games were in the front or center of the toy stores behind a counter in the US in the 80s at least at every toy store I went to. At Toys R Us I believe they were right next to the bikes.
>>
>>3196356
Atari 2600 was loved even after the NES came out. It was even brought back and put on sale again in the late 80s. It did better against the NES than Atari 7800 did lol.

>And it did.

Grossly inaccurate. Video games were literally locked behind glass behind check out counters at both toy stores and department stores. You could not go in a retail store in America in the 80s and pick a game off a shelf because they weren't on shelves.

Sorry. Back. Went out to do things. The reason I couldn't reply immediately was because I was just about to go out when I typed that up earlier.
Anyway, I can't find the original article (which is just as well as it was in French anyway), but I found two English ones that speak to women's involvement in early video games, both playing and designing.

I'm trying to find one that supports my toy store claim, but I'm having difficulty. The French one, if I can find it again, said that in the US, you had your famous video game crash. From the ashes, Nintendo emerged. Nintendo didn't want to sell the NES in toy stores at first but department stores. They ran a mock-up or something of how sales would go if they sold them in the electronics section v the toy section and found the toy section would have been more profitable. Thereafter, toy stores had to decide where to put the games, boy or girl, and Nintendo's marketing department decided to market heavily to boys, so that's where they went.
If sometime after that, the games were relocated to a separate video game department behind a glass case, I can't say. I was not in the US at the time and I can tell you only what I read in the article. Gimme a bit of time to find the info, please.
>>
>>3197101
Americans have told you explicitly that games were NOT sold on shelves, but behind check out counters. There's no need to bother with the article.
>>
>>3197101
I found one! An English language article that discusses a lot of the points I made, though the details differ slightly. I'm not sure if it's that the article I read last summer made different points or I simply misremembered, but this article covers a great deal of the same stuff as what I read back then:

http://www.polygon.com/features/2013/12/2/5143856/no-girls-allowed

If you don't want to read the whole article (though you really should), just ctrl+f Nintendo, it should come up to a point where they start to discuss toy aisles and marketing to boys and so on.

>>3197163
That's nice, Anon. :-)
>>
>>3197163
>being this young
when nes was launched, it was put in a glass case in the boy section while the girl stuff was at the completely opposite end of the store, near the sidewalk chalk and lisa frank stickers, so yeah video games were in the boy section, kiddo, and the only stores that had it at the checkout were video game stores like funcoland and babbages but those sorts of stores werent really a thing until the 90s
