Some people like playing on the go. Other than the lack of an illuminated screen it was better in every way as far as portability went.

You had to bring 6 extra aa and the car + ac adapter on a trip. And have a carry bag or backpack to put it in. 2 extra aa will power the gbc for days.

Never really played the gb at home and rarely took the gg anywhere that wasn't a car trip.

Gameboy had more and better games. Battery lasted longer. The gameboy was smaller and you can't put it in your pocket and still be able to walk. It was cheaper. And if the sun glare help out instead of making it harder to see which if your playing out side or in a car you were mostly out side. The only way the game gear was better is that you can play in the dark. And most gameboys are still working as for the game gear it's hard to find one with out blown capisitors.
>>
>>3072321
Warioland games on VC.
I knew I'd love 1, my brother had that when I was a kid, I think it was actually better now that I'm older and can actually appreciate how goddamn well made the game is.

2 was amazing and I had a great time 100%ing it, very ambitious for a GBC game.

3 felt like a massive step down and it never felt like it got really fun.

>>3072582

Also the library of games, Sega couldn't compete on the handheld market. The Gameboy had lots of Mario titles, Tetris, Zelda, Pokémon, Wario, Ninja Gaiden, Final Fantasy/Romancing Saga, Metroid, Megaman, etc

What did the GameGear have? It had Columns to compete with Tetris and Dr. Mario, it had a pretty neat Megaman exclusive, and a Shining Force title, then some more. It had good stuff, but not enough good stuff, and nothing to compete with the titan that is Pokémon
>>
>>3073037
Lot's of Game Gears died fast because of a plague of bad capacitors, this is a well known problem with the unit, the Nomad had similar issues.

If I remember correctly, the Atari Lynx also had problems with capacitors.

Nope. Not compatible with the e-reader or link cables either.

>>
>>3073139
Seven years, the last game for the Gameboy was Pokemon Yellow in 1999.
>>
>>3073139
In Japan, the GameBoy was released in 1989 while pokémon Green & Red in 1996, 7 years later. GameGear is from 1990.
6 years is quite a bit, but surely we are talking about the same period.
>>
>>3073147
I was thinking US release dates, which moves them forward to 9(R/B 98), 10(Y 99), and 11(G/S 00) years after respectfully, with Japan's being something like 7, 9, and 10.

I wasn't specifically arguing that they weren't from the same period either, just what their thought process may have been.

When did this become cool? I always loved the thing. Got the slick famicom edition, and I really loved how nice games look with smaller pixels, and because the whole system was actually wider than the SP, I found it more comfortable. And it actually fit in that stupid fifth pocket on most of my jeans. I carred it EVERYWHERE for a few years. Granted, it isn't ideal for platformers or things where you need precision, but for most other genres it was fine. I played a ton of RPGs on it, Final Fantasy, Pokemon, Golden Sun... Fuck, that was almost 10 years ago already.

Not sure where all the battery life complaints come from. Mine was fine.

The original GBA had a damn near unusable screen though.

I loved the shit out of my SP, very compact and the games were crystal clear on it's lit screen.
The classic GBA is a very natural shape to handle though.

>>3073872
You can always emulate or use a Super Gameboy to hook it to your TV. Or use a GBA SP, it has a better screen, which is also backlit, which should be easier to see.

It could however be that your Gameboy's screen is worn out, that can happen.

>>3074091
GBA, was a head of its time when it came up.
While its true that using two buttons and cartridge made it look like an updated copy of the original game boy, it packed high spec hardware underneath.
The thing could even play movies even.
>>
>>3074132
I think the later games were made with backlighting in mind. Can barely see castelvania on GBA. Popping a so screen in a GBA is easy as pie though a few invisible cuts and one wire
>>
>>3074152
Still less powerful than a 3DO though, and it didn't even have its own dedicated video processor or SPU.

Forgot to mention that it's GOAT with a backlit screen mod. Expensive? Yes. But it's so much comfier than the SP.

The SP is great and I love the clamshell design, but it's too scrunched for my hands (and I don't even have gorilla hands) and the buttons are way too inferior to the original's.

It was in response to some wangmaster saying anyone who played original pokeyman back in the day is underageb&, which they can't possibly be, even assuming you somehow played it when you were 1 years old.
I must have been maybe 6 or 7 when they launched pokeyman in my country.
It had already been out in Japan and the US so they already had lots of material ready in advance to launch at us immediately, it was like being flanked at all sides from marketing, our young minds were defenseless.

>>3074775
I never had a light on my first model GBA, I just tried to find light conditions where it was playable (which you could sometimes, usually involving finding a room where the sunlight gave you a natural enough ambient light while not causing screen glare). My brother had s front-light (which used one AA battery), but I rarely saw him use it so I figured it wasn't actually any good.

The SP was really just such a massive step up in quality for me, because of the much better screen, I could easily play Castlevania or Doom in any dark room or wherever (granted, Doom is a pretty subpar experience on handheld, but the Doom 2 port is surprisingly intact, only very little trim). Oh yeah, and playing pokeyman in bed at night.

Nah, for GBA, the simplest way to consolize it would be using one of those GBA super gameboys that came out a couple of years ago for the SNES, just build it into one dedicated body.
>>

Scale the image down to 256×224 and change the color palate to 2 bit grayscale.

Before the Gameboy, handheld gaming was very primitive, and typically there would be a limited number of games on your unit, often just one, and very few devices featured interchangeable cartridges, screens were usually bad, too.

So Nintendo has had some popularity with the NES, they're coming out with this Gameboy thing, which
>has interchangeable game cartridges
>has a better screen, which also features a dial for adjusting contrast, allowing you to adapt to light conditions
>has 3rd party support out the door, there WILL be games for it
>is very affordable
>comes with a copy of Tetris, a game everyone in the world is currently addicted to

What really set it apart from other handhelds was the interchangeable cartridges, and the fact that it had games on it which were like actual contemporary console video games.

Instead of a poor knockoff of Tetris, you had REAL Tetris, you had actual Super Mario games, Zelda games, Donkey Kong games, Kirby games, Megaman, Metroid, Final Fantasy/Romancing Saga, it goes on.
Some were trimmed down ports and adaptions, some were perfect ports, others were separate, self-contained games which were purpose made for the system and you couldn't play anywhere else, like the later Pokémon.

And all of it is easily portable, affordable and practical.

If you want a game that really is perfect for the Gameboy, check out Wario Land, everything about it is designed from the ground up to be fitting for a portable, every level is perfectly bite-sized, you can easily go through 3 or 4 courses on a lunchbreak, or in a waiting room, you could plow through a level while you're waiting for someone who's making a phonecall, and there are a lot of levels. There's three savefiles, so you can easily share it with family members or friends, to easily give them a taste of what it's like.

It's true that some games were inferior ports or remakes, but even at that level, it was a really big deal, because again, they were like real console games

I was a huge fan of the GBC version but never knew there was a sequel. I'm having lots of fun playing there are lots of noticeable improvements to gameplay mechanics although some stuff they added i find unnecessary.

really love how they continued the story and keep the playable characters from the first game as npcs in this game.

after that I'll finish Golden Sun.

External front lights weren't great. It was the internal front-lighting mods like Afterburner that shined.

Nintendo handhelds 2strong

>>3086664
I don't think I ever saw anyone with modded hardware like that, but I would believe that an internal light worked better, those ones you fit onto the outside seem like they would just give you lots of glare.

>>3086668
Man, shut your mouth, the GBA plays retro games.

Please stop linking people to this awful wikia. It was only a useful resource back in the first year or so of its existence, but by 2012 it was very obvious that people were simply recommending only their favorite games regardless of how mediocre they are.
What started as a list of the essentials became overrun with casuals, idiots, and redditors offering horrible suggestions just because "Hey, I played this shit liscened game as a kid, I'd recommend it!"

Heresy.

It's certainly more of a sidegrade than an upgrade. The gloomy look of the screen in the Mysterious Woods is neat though.

I love that thing, but I lost my charger for it and since Jewtendo feels they need to make a new charger for every handheld I have no idea where to get another one
>>
>>3082026
Just looked this up and it seems cool as hell. I might get one and let you know. Anyone else know about this?
>>
>>3088181

You kidding? They're $5 on Amazon.
>>
>>3088236
Oh. Thanks.
>>

What counts as retro at this point? Is the GBA retro now? It's over ten years old.
>>
>>3088272
>its over 10 years old

The fucking DS is over 10 years old, never mind the GBA.
>>
>>3088272
>What counts as retro at this point?

Still only systems from before 2000.

>Is the GBA retro now?

No. It will probably be prominently announced if that ever changes.
>>
>>3088272
Careful what you ask, Anon. I posted on GBA's 15th birthday just a couple days ago just simply asking if it was now retro, and it was deleted and I received a warning.
>>
>>3088868
What? GBA ain't retro? That's stupid. The gameboy is the retro handled.

Mods are super inconsistent about the GBA.

(Personally, I think that any game that is at least 15 years old, no matter the system, should be possible to consider for the board)

>>3087927
There's nothing wrong with the DX line.
>>
>>3089015
>nothing wrong with the DX
Sage filthy pig.
>>
>>3088950
You better have done hard mode.
>>
>>3089076
What are your grievances with the DX line? I saw link's awakening at a disc replay but held off because I thought it would be better in color.

Also is the GBA DOOM port a waste of money? I'm interested in it but am having trouble justifying the $25 used price tag when there's a bunch of other, cheaper, renowned games in the used case glaring back at me.
>>
>>3089781
DX is an abomination.
>>
>>3089786
So... no argument. Nice.
>>3089781
The GBA port of Doom is pretty nice. No real issues that I can see but I'm not intimately familiar with Doom, either. Can't lose much by picking it up, it's Doom either way.
>>
>>3089798
If you like censorship, cut content, atrocious graphics and slower controls, the GBA port is great.
>>
>>3089781
GBA doom, while not worst version is pretty ass, doom 2 port is much better but it still kinda ass to play.

1 is kind of barebones, 2 isn't perfect either but doesn't cut much content, most of the game is there actually.

>>3089816
1 cuts a bunch of levels, as well as the spider and cyber demons, framerate is decent if you turn off shadows. Replaces Dis with Fortress of Mystery, which is gay.

2 can't turn off the shadows, but runs pretty decently, no levels or enemies are cut, the Wolf3D levels and SS troopers are even there.
However, the AI is pretty near sighted and absent minded, it wont recognize your existence at 40ft~ no matter what you do, this can be exploited.

Both have green blood, and fading bodies (this is probably for memory reasons if anything), controls are decent.
Music is mostly great. Sound has some compression.

They're Doom on the go, as good as it could be at the time, one better than the other, if you find it for cheap, it's not terrible, beats the SNES and Saturn ports to be brutally honest.
>>
>>3090837
Tron 2.0 is surprisingly good, and has ports of all the arcade games.

The tank battle mode is also practically a movie accurate Space Paranoids.

Its not like you have to download/buy/play every single game in the list, and if some game happens to be terrible and someone plays it since its on the list, they probably just switches to different game and moves on.

Quick, there's a Game Boy micro on Craigslist for $125. It's all black, comes with 2 batteries (Lenmar and an official), a leather case, official charger, official faceplate with screen protector, 2 silicone sleeves and Megaman Zero 3.
Is it worth it? Seller claims 8/10 condition

101's are rare over here in the UK. Most the 101's on eBay are refurbs which are probably fake.
Im not actually sure the 101 was released over in the UK. Micro was.
