Got the Super Metroid at a game store, I was shocked to see it there because the store rarely ever has anything even remotely good retro wise. I found the Ristar box at a flea market for $10, and found a cart a couple weeks back.

To my knowledge Genesis games released around 94/95 and later all came in cardboard boxes, and all original games from 89~93/94 came in the plastic clamshells. I would assume that this was done to perhaps cut down on costs of plastic clamshells in favor of traditional boxes? I know Bloodlines had both a clamshell version and a cardboard box, and that would have been ~'93? Also 32X games came in boxes as well, around the same time as the Genesis boxes, so Sega probably decided it was cheaper to just release all their cartridge games in those boxes.

I just don't think I'll ever understand this. I mean, be honest too, will you get your money's worth out of these games? Have you actually played them yet? I know it's a pretty common thing for collectors to buy games and then just leave them on the shelf.

Bought this for $13 after having it recommend to me in a Dreamcast thread on /v/.

It's neat, but controlling movement and the camera with only one analog stick kind of sucks. Especially if there are any enemies behind you since you can't do a 180 very easily.

Honestly I don't know if I want to open it up or not. I already have an unboxed copy of the game, but it's kinda buggy and prone to freezing randomly, plus I know I wouldn't resell the boxed copy. This is the first time I've actually bought an older game complete so I don't really know how to handle things.

$1000. For 3 carts you'll likely never play that could be replicated to the finest detail for like 100 bucks tops.

I just don't understand collectors' mentality. Like with comics I buy omnis and I'm baffled by these guys spending thousands on old floppies just because they're old.
Emulators and reprints are my jam. Exactly the same experience for little or no money.
>>
>>3070761

>>
>>3071094
Maybe that's how he went bankrupt that one time. He just had to complete his 2600 collection.
>>
>>3070135
I might be completely wrong but I think it was because Majesco handled Genesis reprints at the time, and Sega handled the initial first runs of a game. After that print run/manufacturing period/whatever it's called was over Majesco handled the reprints and so by choice (obviously to save costs) all their stuff came in cardboard boxes and with black and white manuals.
>>
>>3070832
You should go onto the Lost Levels forums or NintendoAge and see if you can get that dumped. Even if there's not much different it wouldn't hurt to archive what little differences there are, especially for stuff like the TCRF page.

I do have it backed up on my computer. I believe there are two other dialogue changes that made the game more family friendly as well as the NIN filler data having a different number aftee the NIN. There are maybe other very small differences in the coding itself, but chances are it was made from a final or very near final JP code so text is probably the only noticeable change.

As an oldfag I an genuinely curious why young people under 35 buy these games. I see a booth or two at the local comic expo where they sell retro games, and there are countless hipster youth lining up to rummage through their things. Some of them were excited and emotional, their first time seeing some of the rare games in person, and they were almost throwing their money at the sales staff.

How do people under 25 have such an emotional connection to the games they only heard about on the internet, and are only interested in them because they are semi-rare?

With most other collectibles there is nostalgia invovled, and most of the expensive stuff is being bought by oldfags with money who want to reclaim a piece of their childhood. That doesn't seem to be the case with retro game collectors.

What is the appeal here? I am pretty sure people who buy the rare games do not even play them. They are usually rare because they were bad games in the first place.

tl;dr

Mostly because its a ridiculous waste of money. I have a few CIB's but it's because I either kept them that way since new or found them in the wild for cheap. The boxes are just packaging and a sealed game is completely worthless until its opened because otherwise you can't play it.

Firstly I'd like to say that I don't think anyone 30 or or even mid thirties like 35 is an "oldfag" , simply put, you're just ten years older than me, and must have experienced the NES days in its full glory.

I'm actually 25 (this is the op) and believe it or not, I actually did play a lot of snes games as a kid. I have a very fond memory of playing super Mario world after coming home from seeing We're Back in the theaters and beating Iggy Koopa for the first time after probably a hundred tries. Shit, I must have been barely 4? Anyways my point is I'm 25 and had a hell of a time playing Super Nintendo games. Don't think us younglings couldn't possibly have any retro memories of SNES just because because of our age!
Now granted, it was actually around the time the N64 came out that I really got into gaming and would really appreciate the medium, but yeah doesn't change the fact that I actually do have fond memories of nostalgia for SNES stuff.
Funny story, I recently got around to getting secret of Evermore and to my great surprise it triggered am old memory I completely forgot about: renting said game from Blockbuster when I was a kid. The intro of the game just made me flashback and I completely remember having it for a grand total of maybe one day before I had to return it.
Which brings me to the main point of everything I'm trying to say: that these old games were a time of my life where things were so much simpler and were pretty much the only happy part of my life. That's why I'm drowning myself in all of this deal. Collecting these games makes me happy. You can't put a price on happiness guys.

Also to all to the people who seem generally upset and have to make a post about it and call people names, unless you don't collect anything yourself you should shut up and stop coming into and posting in these threads.

Here's my small SNES collection I got going, Breath of Fire being the latest.

I could give a fuck about having the cardboard boxes, I'm not paying more than the game's cost for a 20+ year old box and ratty manual. I am, however, a stickler for torn labels/beat carts - anything more than a few nicks from use and its a no go for me.

I'm basically on a mission to reclaim all the JRPG's I used to have or rented alot in decent playable condition. So far I havent broke the $100 dollar mark on a purchase yet, but I fear its coming.

I plan to get repros of stuff like Bahamut Lagoon and other games that never made it here once I finish my current plan.

brace for blogpost

I'm 24.5, my brother is 6 years my senior and had an SNES and Genesis which he begrudgingly shared with me growing up. I got a game boy when I was a wee tyke, and kept on playing and playing.

When I got animal crossing, the first thing I unwrapped was Excitebike. I had never played it before and I was instantly hooked. It became my goal to get more NES games. I eventually used Actino Replay to get them all, and played the fuck out of balloon fight, clu clu land, baseball, soccer, excitebike, zelda, many others. This eventually led me to ebay a few years later, where I bought an NES and four carts. That was my first time playing the original SMB3 (I had played all-stars version growing up), and from there I knew I had to get more. Over the years I amassed more and more NES games. The real catalyst for expanding my retro horizons was /vr/ however. When it first started I was so happy to find a /v/ with video games, and then I started pljaying the games people were talking about and having tons of fun, which I hadn't been having with games for a long time (I had actually taken a hiatus from video games from 2011-2012 or so). /vr/ really helped me find a lot of games I didn't know about. Now I'm really big on Sega, and I'm going to pick up a genny flash cart so I can play all of the games I missed out on as a kid.

I want to say it is nostalgia-fueled, but that doesn't explain my love for 70s/80s games since I was born in the 90s. I think I just like games for gameplay over all else, and there's a great deal of games with fantastic gameplay all throughout history. Recent games seem to downplay gameplay too much, and old classics tend to not do that, so I gravitate toward them.

I'm not the type to collect though, the rare games are too expensive. I either emulate or use a flashcart.

25 here.
The games are good. Also for some SNES games there was the GBA ports.
Also I got quite heavily into emulation during my teenage years. Besides that I've always been curious about the old consoles that I've seen over at friends' places and stuff. It's nice being able to play the old games I only could emulate back in the day on actual hardware now/

I'm no big-time collector though, if the game I want to get costs more than a flashcart, I'll usually get the flashcart instead.

Also, no matter how much you whinge about prices, retro games are generally cheaper than modern ones. Especially if you're smart and import from Japan. (Man, US SNES prices are ridiculous).

It's not even an anime, it's more like some kind of vintage Let's Play. Somebody plays Valis III while the characters' VAs narrate the playthrough. I think it's intended to be a video walkthrough.

Doom 2 is debatable, the monsters added are a mixture of cool and annoying, the level design is a mixed bag as well

Since I see some people on here with them, how sturdy are those box protectors? Are they easy to open? For my game boxes I probably wouldn't be opening them much, but I also have several loose games that I plan to box so I wanted to make sure that they open fairly easily.

This.
Not everyone is going to understand the point in spending tons of cash on games you could be playing for free, that's to be expected. But people can buy whatever useless junk they want with their money. If its not damaging their lives, there shouldn't be a problem.
I've thrown a fair amount of money at SNES boxes and I'm perfectly aware they have no function other than looking nice, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy having them and I certainly don't regret buying them.

they're nice, I think they mainly function as dust protectors, they aren't exactly sturdy enough to protect the box if you drop it from chest height or off a shelf, in fact, one of mine did drop before, and because of the flimsy nature of the type of plastic, one of the tab covers just completely broke off.

they're less protectors as they are dust protectors. also, they dont protect against ultraviolet or even your lightbulb's light, so try not to store them in your room directly to light, or the colours will fade in a few years.

It is about the nostalgia. Same with comics. People remember reading them that way when they were kids so they want to recapture that experience.

I have no intention of selling my SNES games, but for many years I've preferred obtaining Japanese releases. I really do not understand the price disparity on games like X3 since it isn't like the language is a huge barrier or anything. I guess in those cases it is purely a collector issue of the SNES version being presumably rarer than the SFC original.

The SNES version of MMX3 is rarer than the SFC version, it just didn't fly off the shelves here like it did in Japan. It was also a pretty late release in the US and the SFC was supported much longer than the SNES was.

The price discrepency is especially noteworthy because SNES game prices in the US are pretty significantly inflated due to all the demand right now.

I'm 28. My first console was the NES which in 1991-92 was still going pretty strong. My first 16 bit console was the Genesis which I got in like 93. I was already 6 and in first grade at that point. I wouldn't get another console (N64) until like 97. 4 years from ages 6-10 is the right age range where people would have heavy nostalgia for something. Heck all my friends my age also have heavy nostalgia for Nicktoons like Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy, and Doug. All those shows came out before 95. 35 is definitely too high of a "cutoff" for 16 bit shit man.

21, grew up on a hand-me-down SNES and always just had an affinity for older games more because of that. I don't buy overpriced or CIB copies of stuff I haven't played (loose carts though, sure), but for some that I grew up on either renting from a video store or playing on a clunky emulator on our shitty desktop, it's a bit hard to resist. Same if I played something recently and want it on original hardware.

that's the upside though of landing a good job quickly. having the cash to spend on the stuff I couldn't afford as a child's still got that fulfilling novelty for me.
>>
>>3074313
I'm only 18 yet I actually did grow up with snes and n64 games.
As an Australian, my family didn't get into video games and so most of what I played was outdated stuff from my older relatives.
Good thing then that these games were pretty top notch like Zelda OoT or Mario All Stars.

I'm 24 and grew up with an SNES and PS1. Most of the stuff I buy now are games I always wanted to try back then but couldn't afford or find in my shitty little podunk town in the middle of nowhere. I also don't see the point in acting like old games can't appeal to younger people. It's not like these games just stop existing when a new generation comes, there's always gonna be someone new to find the damn things and realize they enjoy them.

Nice, that's actually one of my older brother's favorite C64 games. I'm pretty sure his top favorite is Le Mans.

Oh yeah, it's trash, but I'm a big kinnikuman fan so for $3 I'll take it.

Uh, you mean SFC Rockman series is complete? Hate to break it to you but the two are different... also there's quite a bit of dialogue in x3, unless you can actually read Jap (which I doubt) you're going to be missing a lot of dialogue. Not that it's great or aanything, but still.

I own a U.S. version of MMX.

None of the text in any of the games actually matters and they're exactly the same games as their American counterparts aside from that text.

Besides, any non-English text in the X games is kana. If you really wanted to bother reading the plot, it wouldn't be that difficult for a beginner.

I bet that you're a lot of fun to be around.
