Who here loves old Falcom games?
>>
>>2826585
I never beat it, but always had fun fooling around in legacy of the wizard, even though that game is fucking impossible.
>>
How old are we talking about?
I tried to get into Legend of Heroes 1 but it seems too unremarkable.
I enjoyed Xanadu and Ys 1 and 2. Couldn't get into Dragon Slayer or Romancia either.

Obligatory Most Popful Game.
>>
>>2826615
Same, I've not yet made a serious effort, but one day I will beat it.

My dream is a modern adventure so equally vast and deep that people will have to band together to complete it, just as in days of old.
>>
>>2826585
Altough the Ys series are their best.
I think Brandish, Sorcerian and the rest of the Dragon Slayer series should get more love
>>
>>2826585
A few series like Brandish, Xanadu and Vantage Master are literal gold, the rest isn't really too hot, Ys is pretty overrated too but some of those are really good action games.

Talking about Ys, I kind of bit the bullet and decided to play V, it ain't as bad as most people say but I can see why they complain about it, it's really clunky and unpolished, and the hitboxes seem way off sometimes, still enjoyable though, nice music as usual and great graphics.
>>
>>2826585
Who doesn't?
>>
Not really familiar with them aside from Ys, they tend to have amazing soundtracks though

Popful Mail looks fun but expensive
>>
>>2826974
Ys 5 ain't the worst Ys game I played by a long shot. A problem I had with it though was every single goddamn spell I crafted was shittier than the freebie spell Massea gives you. Just a minor annoyance though I guess

The game gets pretty good once you get to the phantom city. And the time travel shit was pretty interesting as far as Ys plots go.
And I liked seeing where the Ibur gang originated after seeing them as pirates in Ark of Napishtim.

Kinda wish I played the Expert version though, the bosses felt way too easy
>>
>>2827013
>And I liked seeing where the Ibur gang originated after seeing them as pirates in Ark of Napishtim.
Oh, now that is interesting, as Ark of Napishtim is probably my favorite Ys overall.
Thanks for the info, I just killed the first boss so I'm not very far in the game at all, I'm also trying to get used to the combat system though it's pretty hard since I'm mostly used to the modern Ys.

Though yeah, it's definitely not the worst Ys I've played either, Ys IV was much worse for me, I found it very obtuse, same reason why I couldn't get into Sorcerian at all.

You could just burn it.

Otherwise the PCE version isn't too terrible at some 3000-4000 yen, though. Also my favourite version of the game. It's untranslated, though.
>>
>>2826934
How can you love Dragon Slayer? It look like nothing but menial grinding.
Romancia seems impossible to solve without a guide and with a guide makes the entire game pointless.
>>
>>2827028
it gets better after you get swords that aren't shit
>>
>>2826878
>>2827039

I tried playing Popful mail but I gave up because the people who made the Sega CD translation apparently made it much harder than the original Japanese version
also I couldn't stand the voice acting

I hope one of the others versions gets fan-translated some day

It's a shame Falcom never let Popful take of as a series. I could easily see Mail burning through all that treasure and forced to take up adventuring life again
>>
>>2827039
>You could just burn it.

i could but you can't emulate a waifu
>>
>>2827041
Can't really say a lot about Romancia (besides isn't there a translated version?). But Dragon Slayer is mindless fun. See it this way, it's more of a endurance game to see how long you can keep on killing and grabbing dosh.

But this wouldn't be emulating your waifu, anon. It would be copying her (illegally) and then running her on real hardware.

Almost as good as the original waifu.

that sounds dangerously close to ruining your laifu territory

Old Falcom is absolutely worth getting into, and some of the best oldies got remade.

>>2826630
Dragon Slayer and Romancia are some of the company's worst titles, and Yoshio Kiya (programmer/director on both) made sure never to put out anything so unpolished afterward. Xanadu must have been a freak accident coming from him during that period; from Sorcerian onward he and his co-workers mostly did better.

>>2827054
They were happy pumping out comedy/SOL CD dramas for Popful Mail, though. I'm hoping for a remake/sequel one day.

I think he just meant he hates modern design aesthetics.
>>

What's wrong with Romancia? I was planning on playing this translation http://www.romhacking.net/translations/1264/ before Legacy of the Wizard

should I skip it instead

>>2827184
>>2827168
well, of course there has been a shift in art styles (there was one between the 80s and 90s too)
but calling it pre-moe and moe respectively is bad naming since both could be called moe, just of different ages.

for a very small handful of shows that you're an idiot for watching anyways

there are a shit ton of shows that get made every year, Quit focusing on the small percentage just so you can have something to bitch about because the percentage of moe shows and fanservice shit hasn't change a bit

Very strict time limit for beating the game + Druaga-like obscurity and lack of hints for many things + subpar audiovisuals. Xanadu is difficult in a more accessible way (at first), and Drasle Family at least gives you time for mapping the dungeon out and experimenting in one playthrough.
>>
>>2827298
I thought the time limit was removed in the famicom version?

I really like Dragon Slayer for the Duo. Really comfy game that I wish I still had. Ys Book 1 and 2 and Dawn were also great.

If it's anything like the PCE version, you'll progressively get better gear that should make things easier/you able to withstand more hits. It's probably the most difficult in the beignning.

That said, even the Japanese Mega CD version is a tad bit more difficult than the PCE version and the PC-98 original.
>>
I'm gonna play Brandish after I finish Ys 7

I know it ain't retro but Ys 7 is the best Falcom game I ever played
>>
>>2828482
VM (and Japan) deserve more love. They at least have great art direction and music, but it's really cool that Falcom jumped right into wargaming during the Windows transition.

I didn't find Xanadu that difficult, it's mainly unbalanced.
I cleared much of the final floors by staying invisible so that enemies can't attack attack you.
The distribution of items isn't very thought through. I ended up wasting stuff like mantles and flying boots because I thought I could get more of them later on and didn't fully grasp how to make complex jumps.
>>
How's the PSP version of Brandish? I recall trying an SNES game in the series and not liking it too much.
>>
>>2831698
It's a reboot, not a port not even a remake.
>>
>>2831710
The remake is 99% faithful to the PC-98 original.
>>
>>2831710
>It's a reboot
It's most certainly not.
It's a remake based on the original PC-98 Version with some slight rebalance and additional content.
Pretty decent remake too.
>>
>>2828205
Hell yeah.
Fucking Ryo Yonemitsu was a genius.
I should replay Dawn of Ys one of these days, the game was quite charming.
>>
>>2831698
It's worth a play for the Dela Delon Mode alone.
