I could see Ash taking out one of Shota's, making it 3-2, Shota retaliating, 2-2, Ash retaliates, 2-1, Ash brings out Greninja, Shota brings out Sceptile. Ash doubts himself during the battle so Ash-Greninja weakens enough that Sceptile can damage him enough to cause Ash to faint.
Ends in a draw of 1-1, but we still get Greninja losing another match. And we build up Shota a bit.
I don't think it'll really happen like that, though.
So Shota claimed seven badges in the time it took Ash to get two? He must've chosen to challenge all the easiest gyms.

Why shouldn't it happen that way? It makes Shota's goal of catching up to Ash finally coming to head as he now sees he at least has tied with Ash and would likely soon surpass him if he continues his path.

Shota doesn't have to sacrifice his gym battling schedule for someone else, unlike Ash who deliberately delayed his battle just so Serena can compete in the Master Class.
