X/Y would have been infinitely better without the fucking tag alongs.
Firstly they make it VERY hard to project onto your character because the game just tells you that you're now friends with these random assholes and gives you a slap on the butt and makes you travel with them.
Also they make the story so linear that you lose the illusion that you have any control of the adventure.
Also they hold your hand so fucking hard you don't get to find anything out for yourself. I'm not just talking game mechanics but story elements too. The experience feels cheapened once you realize very little would be different if you weren't there.
Tierno and Calem/Serena are easily the worst too. I have no problem with a trainer obsessed with dancing but I'm just not sure why he was given a Pokedex. It just seems too specific. Calem/Serena just make awful rivals. The best rivals in the series were great because they were always one step ahead of you and you were only a little better than them even though they'd never admit that. But Calem/Serena are always one step behind you and never miss a chance to remind you how superior you are to them.
I like how Trevor would compete with you by comparing your Pokedex to his instead of actually battling. But his presence just feel ultimately unecessary.
Shauna is the only tolerable one character wise. She wouldn't have been a very good rival though.
They had potential but it was squandered when Game Freak fired all their good story idea guys to dumb down and produce effortless mobile games for handheld devices

This is depressingly true. I remember that I was quite interested at the beginning of XY, but it became clear pretty quickly that none of it was going anywhere.
Here's what I would have liked to see

In the end the power of friendship would make them see the error of their ways, this is a pokemon game still, but it would have been a good plot development for them. As it is, I just feel guilty 6-0ing them every time they want a battle.

Pokémon has always been a series that invited you with its diverse characters and worlds to make you feel like a part of it. It wanted you to form bonds with your Pokémon, but Gen 6 lost sight of that, and without compelling challenges to overcome with your Pokémon, you are no longer able to create new memories with them as individuals. You lose your story as a trainer when the game trains your Pokémon for you and becomes increasingly linear and limited, using the world narrative to push you from place to place. And if that world narrative is just a retread of Gen 4's story, with some of the weakest written characters in the series, it, too, becomes a blur. If there's nothing waiting for you on the other side of it, your adventure with your Pokémon has ended before it's even begun.

I've been replaying Y, and every time they show up I want to throw my 3DS out of the window. It doesn't help that I just came from playing W2, where you have Hugh which is at least tolerable, and Colress which makes for a great semi-rival.

Shauna spends much more time with the player than the other two. Even more than Serena/Calem, probably. She's introduced along with Serena/Calem and she's the first one the player battles. She's the most helpful person throughout the game, on healing duty several times and in terms of plot she distracts Team Flare for you twice and is the only reason you could get to Xerneas/Yveltal. She even trades you a Starter.
Appearance-wise, she's got the cutie thing going for her, while Tierno is a fat fuck and Trevor just looks ridiculous.
In terms of personality/motivation, she's just as simple as the others but "ditzy" and "wants to make memories with her friends" are both completely reasonable and expected traits for a young/teenage girl to have. Even if she's as cliche as the others, it's not as jarring as Tierno's retarded "dancing Pokémon team" nonsense or Serena/Calem and Trevor's Trainer-related goals that both completely define their character and they're not even good at because you're required to shit all over them.
Even with battling, she's probably more of a challenge than the other two even though you only battle her twice. She's the only Rival who uses a Psuedo-legendary in the main game, even if it's only a Goodra. Even her team theme is more consistent, two "cutemons" plus her Starter. Tierno only has one Pokémon remotely associated with dancing, and Trevor just has a handful of somewhat uncommon Pokémon.

Cheren and Bianca are probably some of the best rivals in the series. I really like Barry though
Barry's team is probably my favorite out of any rival, and his character arc is simple but pretty well done. He goes from being a bit too excitable and over the top to someone more responsible after Jupiter shows him up. By the end of the game most of his ridiculousness had subsided

I just came from replaying both and Hugh was WAY better than the X/Y rivals. He at least stood up to the evil team and had some good dialogue. The X/Y rivals just stood around and acted like pears. Serena/Calem cry at you because you're better than them now and then but that's it.
