Today we celebrate Gamer2020's latest release of Pokémon Game Editor 3.6, which I have no idea how the fuck to use (just kidding)

Topic of the thread: Why are you hacking?

As usual, I'm looking for map rates. After a week of being disillusioned and nearly giving up because of my lack of skills, I have come back today to restart my hack with a furious run of mapping.
This is my new draft of Route 22. As you can see, the ledges now serve a point-to get from the upper central road back to Viridian quicker with a couple of trainer surprises. The Nido Ranch has been relocated from Route 1 to here to give the expanded map a purpose other than Rival Battle #1.
No scripting has been done-I've expanded Route 2 a little to accommodate something as well as a total move-around of Viridian City (yes, I'm using ledges to elevate the Gym now rather than mountain tiles.)
Criticism and tips please.

Viridian City; green circle is Indigo League Rangers HQ West, blue takes you to Viridian Lake.
VL is being envisioned as a fishing community addition to VC with an exit implemented off Route 2.
Going to delete Old Man roadblock here because I'm going to make the National Dex, running shoes, and 5 balls available immediately alongside starter selection. The Pokémon League just opened up, here's your Official Pokémon Trainer Starter Kit.

It'll get disassembled eventually, and then we'll have as much freedom as with Red and Crystal.
>>

can i ask how much freedom we have with red and crystal? i'm attempting some pretty radical shit with emerald (huge game world, nearly 1000 pokemon available etc) and am wondering what can be accomplished just out of interest

I like the first evo, but feel the final looks terrible. How do I fix it?
>>
>>25830754
I tried with the bridge but it looked kind of hokey. In my experience I've been over roads built on piles of rock over lakes before (Lake Oologah in NE Oklahoma)
The NidoRanch could be bigger, now that I look at it. Should be a barn for colder weather like real life ranches. Might get rid of that water after all. At any rate, the females need plenty of room to comfortably breed.
>>
>>25830833
Shorter snout, no pupils, fangs. Take inspiration from the Chupacabra of Jackie Chan Adventures.
>>
>>25830831
We have what's essentially the game's source.

https://github.com/pret/pokered
https://github.com/pret/pokecrystal

Some things are more feasible than others, but if you were really dedicated the only limits you have are hardware limitations.

Though, keep in mind that without heavily editing an enormous amount of code, the number of Pokémon has a hard limit of 251 in Red or 253 in Crystal (256 minus certain slots being unuseable). Someone is working on surpassing that limit for Red, though. If you want to have as much as 1000 Pokémon you're probably better off sticking with Emerald, honestly.
>>
>>25830967
thanks for the advice, i wasn't too keen on moving anyway cause i've got a lot of tile work done to make it look like crystal.
>>
So I am working on a ROM hack and I want to edit character text that they give when you talk to them. I found "Advance Text" but that is clunky as fuck and tells me that it can corrupt my rom if I format my text wrong.

Anyone know of something good to edit text with? I tried the Script Editor in the Pastebin but it doesn't work for my FireRed ROM for some reason. It doesn't even register that the ROM is open.

Thanks in advance, everyone.
>>
>>25831171
I use XSE with free space finder and a simple message box script.
Basically you just open the ROM with XSE, paste the msgbox script, find 250 bytes of free space, write and insert the desired text, debug/compile and use the overset FSF gave you to replace the old one for the NPC you want.
>>
How would I go about programming in moves that do a different type of damage? For instance, an electric move that does ice damage. And for that electric move to be able to hit Pokemon that are ground (and thus be super-effective since it would be dealing ice damage.)

Unless there's another good reason for him to be standing there, I'd make the Nidoranch guy not be such an obvious roadblock and just have the fencing or water block the player there instead. I know as a player it's pretty irritating when there's just a lone chucklefuck NPC between me and somewhere I can see and think I should be able to go.

Definitely looks better than your first attempt(s) anon, keep up the good work.

>>25833043
Most other generals stay active because they're driven by tripfag shitposting/attention whoring/circlejerking/drama and other discussion unrelated to the topic (eg. "how was your day /ksg/")
These threads are extremely focused and for anyone to actually get into a position of being central to discussion they have to at least be seriously progressing on something, a level of effort that escapes most shitposters who know if they're interested in attention they can get much more much easier by going to some shitty RP thread.

How can a 60 BP electric attack also do any ice damage?
Unless it's 30/30.
Best thing to do is make it type damage with status chance like the top half.

My first attempt ever at spriting, here's Professor Sycamore (using Oak as a base). One issue I'm having is that the round face makes him look too much like Oak but if I thin the face all the features come too close together. Any tips on that? Also, any other criticism is nice.
>>
>>25839368
The body is a bit too thick for sycamore, since he's tall and thin.
As for the face, maybe if it's a bit taller, then it won't look as round?

Solid work.
I don't think the face is a problem, but the body definitely seems too thick, Sycamore is really thin.
If you just thin out the legs a little more it might create the illusion that he is thin and just wearing an oversize labcoat.
>>
>>25839546
So your game has a Colress fight?

Sounds good regardless of the Colress similarities, though. I assume it's a boss fight against someone related to the evil team given the harsh tone of it, am I right?
>>
>>25839546
What's the game like?
>>
>>25839644
lel I wanted Colress similarities with the countdown and sycopation, because the boss fight has the same antivillan vibe.

Want me to spoil some of the plot?
Due to the players misunderstanding of the antagonist, defeating him is actually the trigger to the imminent destruction

It has the Dex Nav, Megas, and fully orchestrated scores, but is still sprite based.

Back in my day, Advance Text and Pokescript was all you had, whippersnapper! You made backups and tested your ROM to make sure you hadn't fucked things up!

Also, Advance Text is a lot more forgiving than Pokescript (and most likely XSE), but then again, it IS only editing text- you can't change anything else with it.

Are most/all of you guys doing ROMhacks/Essentials? I've been giving some thought to rolling my own engine as a programming exercise, and was wondering if anyone here could comiserate.

Another question: is there any way, in either ROMs or Essentials, to customize enemy AI? Like a proper state-machine or something. I want my battles to be hard for more reasons than higher levels, and a decent AI would do wonders for that.

>>
>>25849049
>Road leading directly into a cliff
Seems too early/rough to really pass judgement on it either way, anon. The buildings don't clash with the environment, if that's what you're asking.
It does seem like there's an awful lot of empty space in the top right, especially considering how cramped the hilltop area is. I would suggest expanding the area the hill covers while also reducing it to just two levels of height, it doesn't really seem like it fits in with the rest of the town right now.

Keeping the Pokémon Center closer to Route 3 is definitely an improvement.
>>
>>25846041

For editing properties, open the in-game debug menu (surf and other special tiles). For collision, essentials f9 database. For adding new tiles, photoshop or paint.
>>
>>25848817
I'm using Essentials myself. You could customize AI in it, sure, just know that it uses the ruby coding language. It'd probably take you a bit since you'd have to read/sort through all the previous code.

Yeah, it was a bit early. I kind of want to keep the Institute higher than the rest, since it was formerly a citadel for the Mountain Clan.
So here's a further draft. I think I've built the top section to the point where the player won't notice the tile errors on the north side, but idk quite yet. I've begun block editing though, so that may solve it down the line but it's one of the least of my concerns atm.
Yellow top is a cave. I'm planning on having Gym Leaders send players on a quest before they are allowed to challenge them; this is where Brock would send a challenger, into a cave complex to retrieve a fossil.
Yellow bottom is I didn't know what to do so I put a tree nursery like the first draft of my hack. Pewter's a college town but it's got to have some sort of economy aside that, right?
Thought about sticking some houses down there though.
Bottom red is the Institute dormitory. Might drop some grass down there on the other side of the pond with a cut tree obstacle, mulling it around.
One last thing, had kind of a radical thought that might be stupid-if I removed a map from its connections and made it accessible via warp, would I be able to more easily use different tilesets between maps? Last time I drafted Pewter I had issues cutting the bottom treeline down a few trees because the tileset on Route 2 is Viridian City's while Pewter is Pewter's.
Sorry for the blog post, but this is the best place to get regular feedback.
>>
>>25850553
Essentials or ROM? It should be really easy to just add a "Route" tree that common to all the tilesets that need it in Essentials.

ROM, that'd work with Gatehouses yeah. Be an easy way to have exposition NPCs that remark on what happened in the town beforehand.

I'd stick an insect house(The one with a beetle on in) in the forestry area. Maybe an NPC that judges bugs based on IVs, rewards for good ones?

I'd add the flower garden back in in front of the pond.
>>
>>25851096
ROM. RPG Maker probably wouldn't run well on my aging laptop, since Zeta/Omicron ran sluggishly. Not a big fan of custom tiles, either. FR/LG's native tiles are the peak of 2D mapping imho.
>>
>>25851190
I like FR/LG base too, but some of the FR style custom stuff is good also.

Can't help you though, never touched mapping in ROMs.
>>
>>25851190
RPG Maker should run fine on a toaster so long as you don't make maps too big (especially a problem with Essentials since it loads all currently adjacent maps at once) and don't flood them with parallel process/auto-run events.
>>
>>25851346
Hmm. Well, a cursory look into it intrigues me (this ROM hacking stuff alone is pretty fun, could make low-end RPG creation a hobby), but the price tag is too much for me at the current time.
>>
>>25851518
If you're only looking into XP for Essentials, the RPG Maker General over on /vg/ might still have a crack for it if you don't mind that kinda thing.

If you still want it legit, it gets really low on sale on Steam. Talking like 85% off low, so it's worth keeping an eye on that.
>>
>>25851518
>>25851518
Yeah, XP gets put on sale really often.

Otherwise, you can get a copy with keygen with a google search easily.
>>
>>25850553
Nice! A few things...

I would love if there was more mountainous areas north/west/east of the city, towards the edges of the maps. It would fit the city better and make the rocky area less isolated looking.

I would move the Gym down to the bottom right, and keep some of those trees intact - maybe add an NPC that gives you a Berry every day?

I wouldn't have EVERY gym leader send the player on a quest... makes it too predictable and hand-holdy.

Admittedly I've only done it in Crystal so it might take longer in Gen 3, but it really doesn't take long at all in my opinion, the only challenge is coming up with a moveset since they won't have all the moves they could learn in the Gen they were introduced (or if it's a Fakemon I guess that would be more involved in general).

My hack is called Kanto Roads. http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=365632
It's a reimagining of Kanto with emphasis on the Great Pokemon War and the role of the Elite Four and Gym Leaders and stuff: the story is evolving as I go. There's a brief (awful) demo available, but none of what's in it is really current to the project since I started over completely.
I'll try to dig up old stuff later after work or tomorrow.

Okay guys, I've put about 3 hours into Route 3 today before and after work. I took a look at HGSS version, which I've never played but thought was pretty nifty. Cutting off map connections in favor of straight warps so tilesets don't clash.
It's not really completed, but I don't see myself making any more drastic overhauls to it. Going to spread the trainers out over the map so they aren't as cramped together.
I know a rain shadow could be a factor but inside Mt. Moon there is a lot of leakage, so the logic is that Mt. Moon actually sits on a massive aquifer.
Considering turning one of those craters into a spring; as for now, they'll hold scripted rocks that will allow the player's Deoxys to change form like HGSS as well as a research team from the Pewter Institute. Could be it was an ancient sacred place for the Mountain Clan, who would consider the meteors gifts from their Sky-God.
Now, how's that grass look? One criticism I usually get is making forced grass optional and ledges superfluous.

I own RPG Maker VX ACE

The trees in the little canyon? I swear some people have never seen actual nature before. I understand how the narrow pathing can be a pain in the ass if you're trying to speed through as quickly as possible so you can bumblefuck with Zubats in Mt. Moon, but it's a mountain. Bring repel.
Of course, narrow pathing is one of my problems when it comes to mapping, but I think it's justified here.

Adding the p/s to Gen 3 is a matter of adding Doesntknowhowtoplay's p/s split patch. Literally seconds.
Fire Red is the most well documented rom to hack, followed by Emerald; of course, if you can figure out how to work with disassembly then you could always hack Crystal or Red.
I think FR is the easiest. There's so many resources and tutorials and tools, making a 386 hack ala Omega Fire Red is child's play; making a hack like mine that's only really mapping, trainers, and dialogue/events is also very simple and easy. It's all a matter of time consumption.
>>
>>25869948
>I swear some people have never seen actual nature before.
In game maps are not meant to 100% copy nature, they are supposed to strike a balance between looking natural, being easy to navigate (unless they're explicitly not meant to, such as in a maze) and signpost the different directions a player can go, as well as facilitate exploration.

Randomly plonking trees every four steps is not the same thing, and just makes for annoying gameplay, whether you're turbo-ing or not. It has nothing to do with wild encounters, either, so the Repel argument doesn't really work.

Okay, here's the rework of the trees to make them less annoying; I've circled the tiles trainers will be at so you can get an idea how going through here would be; by the time you get a bike and want to go back this way you'll not need to take the green low path to Pewter. Going back through here would be a pain, but I'm thinking sticking some Strength boulders around could work around the ledges.

Holy shit, that looks amazing. Can't say I'm a fan of the whole Great Pokemon War type deal - I feel like that story is out of place in the Pokemon universe. That said, it's possibly your writing will be top-notch and all will be forgiven

Ever considered releasing/making a version that doesn't go in hard with the story? Is literally just Kanto with longer routes, bigger cities, more flavour?
>>
>>25869623
Don't be ashamed of owning RPG Maker. It's a very versatile program in the right hands.
>Does it translate well into VX ACE?
Not at all. There are VX Ace-friendly alternatives that /vp/ doesn't know about. But nobody has made an engine specifically for VX Ace.

I'm working on a personal game where you can recruit enemies to your party, which I'm sure I could rework into a Pokemon Essentials VX Ace when I'm done. I make no promises though.

If you're interested, I can point you in the right direction to some useful scripts. You won't get it to look exactly like Gen 3, but you can get pretty close. If you use VX instead of XP, you'll definitely be remembered for the guy that did something new.

The war is essential to the story of Giovanni and Mewtwo. Why did Giovanni need Mew? Why are the bird trio, who belong to Lugia in Johto, perching in Kanto-at key places such as the Power Plant, Victory Road, Seafoam Islands?
The way I see it, there was a war of eastern aggression, led by Giovanni and the old Indigo warlords against rustic, rural Johto and dragging the rest of Kanto along with them. I'm still working on how each city fits together, like Cinnabar being akin to pre-conquest Ireland, Fuchsia being kind of a Sparta sort of culture and Saffron being an opposing Hellenistic city-state that hegemonizes the surrounding towns.
I've got backstory written for the peoples of Kanto, where they came from, their relations through history. This is to tie in the Clans I'm introducing; Fire Clan, Mountain Clan, Sea Clan.
The war is also necessary to explain the system of government, what being a Gym Leader and a Champion means, why young people can go about running around and why the economy is awesome-it's almost as if someone wished for world peace. It's almost as if a certain Pokémon that wakes up every 1000 years and can grant three wishes was discovered by four elite trainers desperate to end a war in which Pokémon were used to their fullest devastating potential. Look at this picture and imagine how fucked the world this is happening in is and what you would do to stop this shit and make it a better, brighter, safer, happier place where war will never happen again.

Keep the overall world/map similar, though not necessarily identical. This anon did well even if he's changing things a bit too much for my taste:
>>25830811

Keep the pokemon rosters similar, eg. Brock should still have rock types, Misty water types, and their levels and roster count should be similar.
Making all pokemon available before the Elite Four is fine but the distribution should make sense, eg. no Chimchars should be available among the Rattata at the beginning of the game. In fact adding a new area where pokemon from the national dex are available isn't a bad idea but it shouldn't be too comprehensive. It's similar in concept to the sevii islands although the sevii islands were executed poorly (if someone were able to recreate and compact the islands onto a single world map that could alleviate some of the headache).

Remove the need for HM's, maybe split physical/special, and there might be other QoL improvements I'm not thinking of atm.

But basically when people attempt to create their own original stories they end up being shit.

The annoying thing is that there's no easy way to recruit an enemy to your party. You'll have to make an actor variant for every enemy. That means you'd have to make every Pokemon twice.
Evolutions would be easy to implement though. Just make a common event that occurs after every battle to check if there's a mon in your party that meets the proper requirements; if so, then it activates a scene of the mon changing to whatever actor id comes after it. If the mon doesn't evolve, then nothing will happen because you didn't give it any evolution requirements.

TL;DR: If you decide to go with VX Ace, do yourself a favor and don't use more mons or attacks than what you plan to use.
>>

>But basically when people attempt to create their own original stories they end up being shit

But they'll never improve as a writer or develop any sense of originality if all they do is hang on the coattails of professionals.

>>
>>25871627
>Instead of bragging they can feel good about investing minimal effort into improving something.
Vanilla hacks are a dime a dozen. If making a minimal-effort hack is enough to make you feel good about yourself, then that says more about your self esteem than your quality as a rom hacker.
It's not always about improving the original game. Some people just want to make their own adventure taking place in their own region.

Maybe I should namefag myself in these threads, I've started the last 4 of them.
For distributions, I'm taking a page from Drayano and having that explained by migration waves. I don't intend to implement more than the 386 available, but might try to add the related cross evos eventually for completionist sake.
While I understand type theming, it makes things too easy. All you need is the right type advantage sweeper, clear the gym, and then box the fucker. It makes the overall game too predictable. I want trainers to have at least two different types available to them-for example, a Fire Clan would have steel and fire but also carry pokemon you'd find in a cave habitat like Zubat or Geodude.
New areas are there for the thrill of exploration, decompression of distribution (there needs to be some overlap), and new trainers to challenge.
As for HMs-nah. I'll just make them deleteable. p/s is a necessity imo, most players trash a hack without it. Some would say the same for reusable TMs, but I think TMs should be rare and powerful.
>But basically when people attempt to create their own original stories they end up being shit
Most people who make Pokémon hacks don't try writing. I do. I'm not very good at it in long form (that mess of a heroic fantasy novel of mine has been collecting dust for nearly two years now) but Pokémon is a very short story that rely more on brief events and dialogue snippets than witty banter and epic prose. I'm not Hemmingway, but neither is Pokémon.
>>
>>25872107
It's like bringing up your favorite color in response to someone posting about ice cream and criticizing that person when they say "OK". Legitimate discussions are fine but try to stay on topic.
>>

>As for HMs-nah. I'll just make them deleteable
That still makes HM's a burden but it's better than nothing.
>Some would say the same for reusable TMs, but I think TMs should be rare and powerful.
This also makes learnsets much more important and encourages using a varied team between playthroughs so it's not a bad choice, but I personally can't stand it.
>>
>>25871627
>Remembered for being shit by any sensible person.

Not always true.

I don't think I've ever found a story in a ROMhack that I'd call good standalone, but I have found original stories in original regions that, while following plenty of tropes fairly straight, manage to not just directly replicate an existing Pokémon while still being about as engaging as a good official Pokémon plot (which is to say, not that great but still engaging enough that the game isn't just going from Gym to Gym). The second half of Dark Energy is a good example of that, with decent rivals, decent villains (though the beta wasn't far enough to really flesh them out yet), etc.

It is true that most original stories are bad in ROMhacks. But, most of anything is bad, it's a universal constant, and there are plenty of bad vanilla-ish hacks out there.
>>
>>25872157
Are you new to /heg/? Are you new to /vp/ as a whole?
Typically the hacks that are most talked about are the ones with shit plots, crappy regions, etc. So what if they're shit? They're getting attention and that's what matters.
Nobody remembers the vanilla hacks after they're released, because they never do anything beyond change the enemy distribution.

I know you're just going to respond to everything I say with "Ok", but I have time to kill so I'll humor (You).

Matters in what fucking context? Jesus Christ you're trying to argue something specific to the subject that I don't even give a fuck about. They get attention. Awesome. So what?

>I know you're just going to respond to everything I say with "Ok"
Because you keep changing the topic and making statements that I don't care about or even agree with. I agree with you when you say shitty roms can get attention, but so what if they get attention? What does that have to do with anything I've stated?
>>
>>25872196
I understand HMs being a forced move is a bitch. It sucks. I'm going to edit them and reduce them to (hopefully) make them an asset, rather than a burden. For example, making Flash equivalent in BP to Swift, unmissable, confuses, and is learnable by any mon but only 15 PP. Idk how stupid that is, but it's better than dropping accuracy.
I guess I could create field items when the time comes, but for now the thing is going to be better HMs.

You're confusing me with yourself:

If you didn't want to have a discussion then you should've kept your shitty opinion to yourself.

Did you not see how that's a clear mockery of you bringing up publicity or are you merely pretending?

I'm trying to have a relevant discussion with you. but you're acting like an idiot to get out of it because it's not something that (You) want to talk about.

Alright. This has been a fun waste of 45 minutes but I have to go now. You can add me to your list of successfully trolled anons if you want.

How is mocking you for bringing up an irrelevant topic "playing dumb", or are you saying you meant something else, in which case my point still stands:
>They're still remembered more than the vanilla one.
>I'm trying to have a relevant discussion with you.
Remembered more than vanilla-ish romhacks? Agreed. So? What does one romhack being remembered more than another have to do with my original post in which I call original works shit and "remembered as being shit by any sensible person"? Now do you understand why the topic you keep bringing up is irrelevant and why I've told you several times I don't give a shit about it?
>because it's not something that (You) want to talk about.
You acknowledge I don't want to talk about your irrelevant topic and yet you continue. It's strange.

For me, red and yellow never looked good together, so I'm not that fond of Magmortar... but I do like your choice for the body color.
>>
>>25873808
I tried to cover it with soot, like a Fire type coulde be. Charmander and Charmeleon were given up the golden/yellow color to match Charizard's. As for Garchomp, it's a Ground type and its shint version is almost identical. I figured it could be nice to give it a sandish theme.

I see what he means. I think if you took the color from magmar's beak and used it instead of the yellow on magmortar, it would look a lot better.

The thighs and spikes need to be another color.

Was going for a normal 8 badge game, but had and idea I wanted to run by y'all. Instead, I'm thinking of having 16 gyms and 2 elite 4s. There will be a gym of each pokemon type, and two gyms will be double battles with a type duo. After the first 8 badges you do the grand 4, and then after the final 8 badges you do the elite 4. Elite 4 teams are not based on type, but instead strategies, such as weather and entry hazards. This allows for a game where gyms start at lv 10 going up in increments of 5. The final elite four will be around lv 95.

Most people have trouble making a game with just 8 badges and finishing it. 16 just seems like a bad idea, especially if you're new to this stuff. (Making an assumption here.) That's 16 gym puzzles too.

My advice would be to go for 8 and make the game fun around that. Sure, go for more afterwards if you're still ambitious enough after completing 8 gyms, but don't plan your entire game around that.
>>
>>25876198
intervals of straight 5 will likely lead to some issues with the level curve. Good luck testing.
>>
>>25876198
Sounds extremely complicated and near-impossible to balance a level curve for.
>>
>>25876221
That looks bad too, senpai. But I do like that shade of red on the back spikes. Keep the spikes but do something else with the lips and thighs.

This is good though. We're getting somewhere, not just flinging insults.

You don't plan your story around the number of gyms.

You plan the number if gyms around your story.

Unless you have a piddling amount of trainers, no dungeons(that what Team X bases are), or do a flat reduction on EXP earned 5 levels between gyms isn't going to work.
>>
>>25876198
That'll only work if your game is centered around getting badges.

What you could do is design your region like a theme park, for lack of a better word. Instead of traditional gyms, you'd explore random routes & dungeons and battle a gym leader at the end.

I wanted to make a small reskin hack of the Gen 2 games for me and some friends for fun. If I wanted to go about doing this, assuming I only wanted to try to do the following:

1. Edit trainer pokemon
2. Edit wild pokemon
3. Edit what moves pokemon learn and how they evolve
4. Maybe edit text
5. Maybe add in new pokemon

Which of these options would you guys recommend?

Using PPRE on a Heart Gold rom?

Trying to hack into Liquid Crystal (it seems further along than the other hack)?

Or is there some other method to go about doing this?

Can you even add new pokemon/sprites into HGSS?
>>
>>25876345
>planning stories
The bigger the story, the worse the game for pokemon. You should plan interesting routes, and then sneak some lore in through npcs.
>>
>>25876808
Story doesn't have to be big to require some planning, though. Unplanned stories are very rarely any good.

>>25876270
Would it be better to do a level curve similar to sshg? How did they go about getting 16 badges in?
>>
>>25877377
the level curve in Gen 2 is terrible. You get to 30 and the exp just dries up is how they handled it.
>>
>>25877413
Hmm. I see yeah. Before I even thought of 16 gyms, I had planned to have level caps plus level lowering items, would that help or make it even worse? And the 5 lv increment isn't set in stone, just looking to make it for level 5 to 95 sort of game.

The story itself is less overarching, and more city by city, so it would work with an increase in badges. A bit like real life, each town has its own gossip, issues, people creating a story, with slight connection between towns. For instance, one town has recently suffered a fire, and theres people blaming people/pokemon, while others say it happened natually. Then the neighboring towns have a bit of fear of it, avoiding fire pokemon, telling rumors. The overall story is more of a central theme, the idea of a changing world where both natural and man-made occurrences happen, with no clear answer in terms of blame or solutions. No big bad, no legendary that is being used to take over the world, more sort of slice of life and exploration.

Took awhile, but finally have a full Pokedex mapped out. My project is basically retyped Pokemon based on environmental factors and such. The Pokedex now has every type combination possible, and ended up with 392 Pokemon total. Is that a good size? Im going to have many of them as in game trades and secret encounters, so looking at about 4-5 new Pokemon families per route.

Does anyone have any tips on Essentials optimization?

I'm taking >>25851346 to heart, thanks.

I'm using Elite Battle System and occasionally notice lag when switching pokemon or using attacks, does this have anything to do with the scaling of sprites present in the general battle settings?

Would I be better off resizing sprites and setting it to 1 instead? Perhaps using the Gen 3 interface? Does anyone else have lag or is it solely due to my toaster laptop?

Thanks, /heg/

NOOOOO!
Anyways, drafted Viridian Lake. Somehow the lake doesn't feel big enough, even though the dimensions are the same as Saffron's. Final product will have about 3 or 4 trainers hanging around and a hidden item. This is a great place to stick the Old Rod fisherman as well. It's a warp-only map, so I lined it up next to Route 2 to show where the west exit goes; south exit is to Viridian, of course.
Thoughts?

The story you've got planned out seems very comprehensive. Not my cup of tea at all though. Doesn't help that I feel like the Great Pokemon War is fantheory that got ran into the ground. That's not going to stop me playing your hack though, no siree
>>

Gotta admit anon, no-one in /heg/ actually answers questions if you express any personal opinion or preference. They just criticize you for it.

I still want to know if there's any good Essentials games around
>>
>>25881710
Really nice, would make a lovely town area in its own right.

Please line up those top two houses to be the same length away from the lake - it'd be more pleasing to the eye. I'd expand the grass patches on the south side of the lake to make it wilder.

The place could use something though. Like an in-game trade, or an old lady selling Berry Juice, or something. Or even a Team Rocket showdown with the Fisherman.
>>
>>25881971
I wanted to make it like a fishing village or a suburb of Viridian and 3 houses seems to make a village in Kanto (see: Lavender, Pallet)
I'm not doing in-game trades at all in my hack. It doesn't serve much of a purpose in hacks imo unless you're getting a slow leveler, and in that case a Lucky Egg works just as well.
In the older first run I placed a sprited Squirtle encounter but I decided to go in a different direction with starter pokemon.
Team Rocket is a great idea though! Since I'm doing a 7 member team, introducing them in pairs working different operations from here to Mt. Moon works incredibly well. What are they doing in Viridian Lake? Trying to hustle the Fishing Guru for his rods! Those villains! Defeat these idiots and the Guru will give you his old rod and a net ball! Now, he's off to Vermillion to see his brother, the Fisher Pryce for a better rod to replace the one TR stole.
This is why I like to keep /heg/ alive and post my shit, it helps to bounce ideas around and get insight.
Thanks, anon!

So I've been working on an essentials game to try and learn the basics, would anyone play this game if fully completed or should I just leave it as a demo/test?:

>Game is basically Sinnoh's B2W2 with Gen 6 elements
>Set a couple of years after DPPt, you are Professor Sycamore's assistant and are being sent to the Sinnoh region to investigate unconfirmed reports of mega-evolution and strange power coming from the region
>You arrive in Sandgem Town where Professor Rowan suggests that you find the Gym Leaders of the region as they may know more about Mega-Evolution.
>Over the course of the game, rifts in time and space appear and the player must traverse through them to continue the game.
>These rifts are being caused by Dialga and Palkia no longer having enough power to keep Giratina from coming out of the Distortion World

or something like that.

I would Aim at a demo first, so you can get input from other people then go for the full game
