I have to say, Ash really has become a boring character these days. Why do people ship him?
I'm actually starting to think the writers will go full canon with Ash/Serena. I think the ships popularity even took the writers by surprise which is why they ramped up the hints and why they promote is so heavily now.
Its possible early into XY Serena was just going to be a token girl like all the others, but perhaps the writers changed their minds. The Old lady was introduced back in XY60 so that was in the first year of XY, so even though she handed her the card perhaps they changed their minds over the last 2 years. Serena will probably go train with her, but for all we know it might just be for a short time off-screen between sagas like how Brock returns to Pewter.
In all seriousness, whatever girl replaces Serena will have no hope of ever being as popular or coming after a hugely popular ship.

This thread hates to admit it, but the anime is a glorified toy commercial. The producers aren't in it for the ratings, they're in it to promote their merchandise to a young audience, and that of course includes the games. The reason they keep changing girls is because each new one promotes a new set of merchandise, and Serena is no exception. Serena promotes XY, and when the 7th generation comes around, they'll have a new girl in to promote that game.
