Copypasta-ing (with mild edits) a portion of a post I made on Serebii because I feel like I stumbled into a legitimately interesting train of thought here:

That's probably the result of that thread being an echo chamber. In an echo chamber, where nearly everyone will have comparatively similar view points, an opinion can only really become different if it's either more moderate or more extreme than the norm. Most often, this leads to a push in the direction of the extreme. That's why three-episode hiatuses become considered droughts, or people start expecting a kiss around the corner: they've pushed themselves so far down the corridor of extremes that they've lost track of how the show usually behaves. I might have mis-explained it a little, but you get the idea.
