Maybe not. He is probably the only character there that is relevant and isn't Clemont. I guess the writers chose James because it's easier to write in compared to Clemont's line-up. Chespin/Bunnelby would need to attack Eevee. Luxray might be overkill for the occasion and what the battle is really meant for, which is show off Sylveon to pull off a win.

I've been slightly liberal on some parts to make more fluid (for example, the last announcer literally said "the winner will beeee...?" but I decided that "last one standing" suited more the dramatic tone. The only thing that really bothers me is what I wasn't able to understand (as a Frog, it's still translating from my fourth language to my second language) like the announcer sentence during the Team Flare vs. Team Rocket part. I'll try to improve quickly.

Hopefully Tomioka is the one who writes the next Yashio episode(s), as I feel like he's the best of the main writers at conveying this kind of drama to the viewer. He absolutely nailed XY60, so I'd feel good about him writing future Yashio episodes.
