Yes, you make yellow by combining equal amounts of green and red. Red and green are not opposite colors, red and cyan are.
I know it's a bit of a mindfuck when you find out, and you might not believe it because you've been taught differently your whole life, but RYB just isn't correct. It was never correct. It was a color system created hundreds of years ago when we didn't fully understand how this shit works. To be fair they were VERY CLOSE in getting it right, but RGB is the correct color model. You're using it right now to get color from your computer screen.
It isn't actually that simple, and I could go in depth if you'd like, but just know that RYB is an outdated model that is still taught, apparently, because people don't give enough of a shit to start teaching the correct model in art class.
Some will try to tell you that RYB is used for subtractive color and RGB is used for additive, but that isn't true either or else we wouldn't use CMYK for printers. Nor is it to say RYB doesn't have it's place. It still happens to be a great pallet for these nintendo-y, kid-friendly franchises, because yellow is a much more fun and playful color than green. And RYGB is great for when you need four colors instead of three.

It isn't.
That's not how that works.
The truth is that subtractive color is a theoretical model. It doesn't work like light, which is perfect. It has to do with paints absorbing things, and it doesn't always work like you expect on paper, because paints are solid objects and color absorption is complicated. You ever notice how mixing red blue and yellow/green, never actually produce black? It makes a muddy brown color.
You CAN mix red and green paint and get yellow, but it depends on what type of paint you use. Paint manufacturers often skew the way their paints absorb color so that it more closely reflects the RYB model that everyone is used to. But that is arbitrary, and doesn't provide a better gamut. RGB/CMY is still the best for paint.
