Hypothetically, valor and mystic will get complacent in their holdings. They wont really try to do more. So eventually, they'll fall behind powercreep wise.
This is you and your friends opportunity to hit them. Instinct is on the fringes, sure, but no one expects them. Show up one day with mons with like 1500+CP and just stock the gym with your guys' mons. Prestige the gym so it holds 8 pokemon and no one will touch you all.

So I went on a walk today to a major spot of gyms and pokespots and met a bunch of mystics and instincts.
All of the mysticfags were creepy. Like, there was one dude who was autistically battling the yellow gym and was bragging about how he defeated it (he didn't, the gym stayed yellow the whole time), one guy talking about making facebook events to pick up chicks, and just a whole bunch of weird people.
Meanwhile, the instinctfags were nothing but a bunch of guys looking to have a good time. Generally gregarious people, not too weird, but just good people. There was a physical therapist tech there too who was still in her scrubs from finishing her shift at the local hospital there and she was team instinct as well.

The ring around the pokemon while you're trying to catch it. Red does mean harder to catch, and generally better but it doesn't mean that pokemon is better than others, just that it's a high CP mon that you have the opportunity to catch earlier than normal.

Take one gym instead and focus on being super autistic about prestiging it up. Use a low CP mon as your punching bag. Then deposit 6 or 8 pokemon at that gym. No one will crack that place. No one.
Rinse and repeat every night until you are surrounded by a fortress of yellow.

Gyms favor the attacker a lot. Think of it as multiple 6 on 1 battles, instead of you aiming to take on all of there pokemon at once.
Also, if you have Instinct friends, get them to attack together, one after the other. You can chip away at gyms with Zerg numbers.

Today I pulled up to a gym only to spot a trainer on his bike. Turns out he was /instinct/ we took the gym together, but only held it for like an hour. The others are too numerous.

I went to the church gym that got taken over by Mystic and tried to battle it. It took out all my 6 mons but I did manage to almost beat it, except it gave me that 1HP glitch, so I left.
Turns out that it says it still has full health, like nothing happened.
