Your thrown ball has to land inside the shrinking circle. The smaller the circle the better the bonus. Pretty much have to hit the pokemon directly in the face. Hitting them when the circle is full is easier and gives a Nice (10 exp), but its better to try for Greats (50 exp, half size circle).

Save up a ton of candies, pop the lucky egg, then spam evolutions. Each evo gives 500 exp normally, 1000 with lucky egg. Pidgeys are great for this since they only need 12 candy and are very common. You can evolve one for every 3 captures, and just evolving 5 of them is already 5,000 exp.
Use the remaining time catching stuff and going to pokestops. A good time to actually use the lucky egg is right before a regular egg hatches, since those also give 500/1000 exp, plus another 500/1000 if it happens to be a new pokemon.

I've literally caught like 70 Pidgeys and turned them into half a dozen Pidgeots, but every single one of them is virtually useless. All of the Weedles and Rattatas aswell. Rarer Pokemons are so rare you can't evolve/power up them. How the FUCK do I get something good without horrendous amounts of luck? Grinding the shitmons forever doesn't get me anywhere. ~CP400 Pidgeots and Raticates just don't cut it for keeping arenas. At this point I have a 99.9% chance to catch something useless if I catch something at all. What's more is that CP150 Pidgeys and Weedles recently started escaping my balls.
