Well, it's not like XY needed 3 vs 3 in first round episode. They could make first 2 rounds 1 vs 1 and at least show quick battles with Ash one-shotting everyone. And Alan vs Trevor was basically one-shot too.
It seems the writers felt the only battles of Ash worth showing were his 6 on 6's with Shota and Alan.
It doesn't bother me that much since Ash is only using his Kalos pokemon, but even then I do think we should have seen at least one full 3 on 3. Probably Ash Vs. Ayaka should have gotten its own ep
