Well, I use gimp too. It's only a little worse than Adobe photoshop I think.
You can find places to download brushes online if you want to explore that more.
Your main problem seems to be your understanding of shape. I'm guessing you're just using the mouse though, so that can be pretty difficult to work with. You can buy fairly cheap tablets if you're really interested in investing in it.
But like I said, gimp and adobe are pretty good. I've tried a few other programs, and they weren't as good to me. I'm not really a professional though, so maybe a better artist can answer better.

I use Clip Studio Paint, which I bought for $15 during a sale. It normally costs $50 or something like that. It's a very good program and as long as you've got a good amount of RAM on your PC and money in your wallet, I can recommend it. Otherwise, get SAI. It's simplier and more user-friendly, and frankly, I like its selection tools better, but I prefer using CSP because it has more effects and customization optionsand because it costed me money, so not using it would be a waste :^)

I use GIMP and a mouse, too. It's not that hard, if you know how to use it of course. I highly recommend to use the Smooth Stroke option, it will make your lines 100 times better.
And use multiple layers for outlines, colors and shading.
I use the Ink tool for outlines and a smooth brush for shading. When you add shadows to a layer which already has colors on it, make sure to lock the alpha channel on the layer, so you only draw on the colors, but not the transparent area.
