I have a basic understanding of most of the dialogue spoken when watching Pokemon, the only episodes that can be difficult are the dialogue heavy episodes. Just keep watching more anime of different genres and you'll get to the point where you won't need subs for it. All the nip I've learned has been through anime, going from no knowledge at all of the language to being able to watch a kids show and able to understand it for the most part is quite possible.

There are certain scenes that are difficult, like the scene where Furfuu guy was crying. I understood some of it, like him telling Ash not to lose, but the rest of that conversation about badges was lost on me. Rest of the episode was easy to follow.
But Pokemon is about the only thing I can watch and have a generally understanding of what is being said. If I were to watch Aikatsu or Cocotama I probably wouldn't understand most of it. Only reason I understand Pokemon is because of how often I rewatch the raws and subs.

Ash is someone Shota looks up to. Shota wants to battle and surpass him whereas Ash needs to defeat him to become a Pokemon Master. At the same time Shota is getting stronger quickly so Ash can't look down on him as a lesser trainer.
On the other hand there's Alan, who Ash looks up to and wants to surpass and Alan wants a fun battle out of their confrontation. There's also Team Flare behind the scenes who are using Alan to gather Mega Evolution Energy from the battles taking place at the league.
