platinum, hgss, bw2 are usually regarded as the best games in the franchise so he isn't completely wrong.
As someone who has been playing since RBY I don't think anyone missed out on anything other than nostalgia, anime, and tcg craziness of the early days of Pokemon. The newer generations have fixed and added a lot of good things.

I like the pokemon games were you wear a hat and there's pokemon in the game and sometimes you catch them. Those are the good ones, the others suck.

HGSS is only praised because of nostalgia. On top of the extreme overdependence on Kanto and Kantomons that Job to has always had, there are 0 (zero) places to grind and the HP bars go down slower than a black girl on opposite day.
