I know the anime is a continuous series but to me it feels like from OS to DP were all one long drawn out saga while BW and XY certainly feel more stand alone.

BW fucked up the entire timeline. OS to DP was fluid because Ash got better and grew up. BW was retarded because they rebooted Ash but tried to somehow connect it back with Dawn and Charizard. They must have realized the fucked up with BW so XY is the most self-contained. SM needs to continue XY, but also tie back to OS to DP.

I think they just chose a bad time to do a potential reboot because, and I don't know how many anons were here during Best Wishes hype campaign, but until the last episode of Ash's battle against Paul in the Pokemon League there was zero indication that they would still be the protagonists. They were even hyping the reveal up as "Look forward to the new protagonists!". Best Wishes was clearly supposed to be a reboot but doing it right after Ash making it to the Semi Finals of the Pokemon League was just bad idea.
Japanese fans are just like us, they care just as much as Ash's position in the League and the League in general as us. I don't know what OLM and TPC were thinking.
