Well it's the fastest means to an end for one.
I dunno about boredom; however, as for leveling the playing field, it really doesn't make that big of a difference.
Regardless of how many neat and quirky age old events we put back into play, it won't make any difference without skilled players with an interest in playing in the competitive scene.
At least that's the way I feel about it.
More than likely it's just folks trying to avoid breeding/SRing, As many of us find it as more of a hassle, that an exciting game play mechanic.

What are the pro/cons of using the 3DS editor over PC? Don't say SD card; I'm not interested.
Also, just to be sure, I can pop a pokemon in a box using the PC editor and my game file will be ok, right? Will I have to edit sID and OTID in order to go online? Anything else to worry about?

PCHex++ doesn't have OT editing, doesn't have savegame editing, doesn't set pokedex flags, doesn't have a legality checker, etc.
PCHex++ is fine if you want quick edits without removing the SD. PKHeX is the full featured experience.

Assuming I can downgrade and find a fool-proof method to install it, will the online features be affected in any way? I have heard something about bans, and I'm like an old lady with technology, I just follow tutorials step by step, so if it entails any danger to my 3ds I'd rather go the safe way and powersave stuff.

Using .cia file will not get you banned. However, your friend cant see what game you are playing. It says "Could not acquire software's title". If you see someone in your friends list has this message, he/she is using cfw.

You can do it with normal homebrew exploits too (like with the picross or basehaxx exploits), but CFW is your best bet, since you won't be fucked over if Nintendo patches anything.
As far as online goes, you should be fine, as long as you aren't a blazing retard and inject weird PSS profiles with 999999 battle wins and garbled summaries. Those people are the only ones that I've ever heard of getting online bans. Even if by some reason you do get banned from battle spot or something, you can always inject a new player ID and effectively unban yourself
