One assumes Alan just hopped on Charizard and flew directly to each city. Ash doesn't do that because, well, you have to mirror game progression a bit. And Ash is in it for the Adventure too. Alan's been around Kalos his whole life, and spent some time traveling it looking for megastones and mega-evolving Pokemon trainers. He has no real reason to go through the region "normally."

May's lack of action moments outside of Contests probably just has to do with the fact that she came directly after Johto Misty and was the first time they were giving a girl a bigger role. Max ate into Brock's screentime, May usually had a role in most Max episodes too.
Even despite that, May still has the second most amount of episodes and on-screen battles of a female companion after Dawn, so its not like she didn't get plenty of screentime.
