Gen 1 had lazy and unoriginal designs. Half the Pokemon can be drawn with a circle and most of the evolutions are the same Pokemon but bigger or copied and pasted a few times.

The blobs and roundness can sort of be explained. Round shapes rather than pointy shapes look softer and more friendly; since their target demographic is kids, it makes sense they would design their creatures to look more soft, huggable, and approachable.

Opinions and all that aside, what makes this pokemon one of the better designs in recent memory?
There doesn't seem to be a whole lot going on in its design, which I know can be a selling point, but I'm not sure it does enough to set itself apart. If you're comparing it just to the early rodents, then I guess it's mouth and inherent anger is cute/funny enough to warrant some praise as there's just not a lot of competition there.
