Mega Evolutions are literally half-baked Pokemon, they're just temporary upgrades to existing species and not supposed to look like new ones. Some designs are more inspired than others, and that can be used to describe Pokemon in general from the last few generations, so there's no point complaining about this exclusively.

What I'm trying to say is, Mega Evolutions are just a power surge like super saiyans. Thus they get bigger, stronger, have extra stuff, but revert back to the base form. In Kangaskhan's case, the baby gets the extra power and becomes capable of fighting while the mega evolution lasts.
